I reckon Stan and Ford are genetically identical and that if you cloned Stan, the clone would have polydactyly.

Like, Stan did develop his extra finger. Sort of. Just not fully, in a way that’s at all noticeable. If you took an Xray of his hands, each one would have tiny extra finger bones that are barely noticeable.

Or maybe Stan did have polydactyly as an infant, but his extra digit wasn’t connected at the bone and had a skinny base. So maybe they cut it off (and they didn’t with Ford’s cus that would be a much more complex surgery and he’d need to be older). Or maybe it got twisted and fell off. Like a skin tag.

Dr. T'Ana from Star Trek: Lower Decks is intersex and canonically disabled (multiple limb differences; tail amputee, polydactyly), and her variation is an unidentified hormonal variation that causes androgenic puberty!

The requester elaborates: “ On Cait, her homeworld, she was born with polydactyl (it seems anyway. the thing with Caitians is that because they only appear in the animated versions, we don't know anything about their biology [+ ... Caitians in other series have 3 fingers and a thumb whereas she has 4 fingers and a thumb]) and a tail difference but they were mostly fine. The tail difference affected her balance when she first learnt to walk because the instructions she was getting were just general instructions for most Caitians and didn't take her tail into account.

In her teenage years (or Caitian equivalent), she started an androgenising puberty which she was fine with in and of itself but made her ostracised a little and in adulthood, she joined Starfleet as a medical officer and eventually a doctor. as a Caitian, people react in certain ways to her (canon. the quote "just a cat in a coat" comes to mind) but she's already used to being the odd one out so it affects her but it's nothing new. Meanwhile on every ship she's on, most of the crew don't notice she's intersex because they don't know enough about Caitian sexes to know.

However, on one assignment, her tail gets amputated about halfway (canon). Caitians don't use tail prosthetics because they're too heavy for the tail's natural function and don't have a good connecting area. They never even thought of it for those reasons but humans still suggest it often. Despite it being the 24th century, T'Ana doesn't regenerate her tail (canon) because her hormone variation means she does not react well to most regeneration technology and she, understandably, isn't willing to risk it on an already vulnerable body part.

Her hormonal variation also means her mating season is affected so it's very rough physiologically and the usual methods (using a post) don't work so she rides it out in her sickbay office by turning the lights down and laying in a box (that end part is heavily implied). But other Caitians say it "can't be that bad". The variation also causes differences in sweating as she can sweat from her forehead when most felines can't (so I'm assuming that typically applies to Caitians too)

Her pain tolerance is a bit different to most people's (canon) as Caitian pain processing is different to humans anyway. But because of other Caitians telling her her cycles can't be that bad and people in general not believing her about her phantom pain because in the 24th century, they think of medical issues as kinda "you have issue → you see doctor → it gets fixed", that's caused her to be able to tolerate a lot of pain which sometimes interferes with her job as a doctor as she assumes other people can do the same thing (that end bit is canon. the reasoning is just headcanon) ”
