It makes sense that Toph wouldn’t pick up on Azula’s lie because she’s such a habitual liar that it probably doesn’t elicit any physical guilt response, but if we’re going by how polygraphs work in real life it should also theoretically be possible to make Toph think you’re lying if you’re telling the truth and you’re feeling guilty about something else or just really nervous.

But I get that that’s not as fun to write in fanfics as 100% accurate lie detection.

Polygraph tests / "lie detectors" are complete pseudoscience.

The evidence is overwhelming that there is just no scientific basis for this shit. They might as well have cops do palm-reading on suspects.

The fact that so many Americans believe that these things actually work is proof of just how unquestioning and susceptible people can be to established "truths."

Btw I've personally beaten lie detector tests maybe... half a dozen times now, I guess?

I can't believe in the year 2025 polygraph tests are still a thing, that they still exist. We've had decades of science all concluding the same thing: It tells you if someone is stressed out, thats it

And usually the person hooked up to one is always in a stressful situation

They aren't even admissible evidence in court in most cases! You can't submit a polygraph tests as evidence except if the extremely rare occurrence where the court makes an expectation, but because of how dicey the whole technology is, all it takes is a lawyer explaining how unreliable the whole thing is to render it useless. Because they are bunk science!

They only reason they still exist is because police departments all over the world can charge $200, $400 or even $700 (they litterally will offer "premium" versions of the test of more dosh) a pop to people who want to drag their teenage kid in to "find out" if they're smoking the devil's lettuce or to the Burger King manager who wants to threaten his employees with one because toilet paper keeps disappearing from the supply closet (the tests are so expensive that this is an empty threat)

They mean nothing, they result in nothing! You can't use the results in any meaningful way legally! They are a scam. Somehow they still exist because enough people don't understand how they work, mainly thanks to crime shows

I'm griping about this because I've been/currently am around people who've dropped big money dragging their employees/friends/family members to these tests over petty BS. I fucking currently live near a 44 year old women who started shrieking at her 4 kids and their cousins, "YOU KILLED MY KOI FISH ON PURPOSE! I KNOW IT WAS ONE OF YOU! YOU PUT BATH BOMBS IN THE FISH POND ON PURPOSE! THATS MURDER! YOU COMMITTED MURDER! WE'RE GOING TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT RIGHT NOW FOR A LIE DETECTOR TEST!" two weeks ago

and I guess they (the test people) fucking did it because turns out theres no age limit for these things, if you have the money they'll happily take it. Now I get to hear children and adults screaming at the top of their lungs from down the street all day everyday, about how theres going to be no christmas this year because they spent all the money on those tests, as I garden in my back yard
