The pond apples planted on 10/07 are starting to pop! I’ve seen these growing in the mangroves here in Haiti by the hundreds if not thousands. The fruit is not the best tasting of the annonas but surprisingly, a good majority of my neighbors loves it and when made into jam, tastes just like pineapple. Second fruit from our Annona glabra and the tree is currently covered in flowers. Not my favorite annona but worth growing. Annona glabra is a tropical fruit tree in the family Annonaceae, in the same genus as the soursop and cherimoya. Common names include pond apple, alligator apple (so called because American alligators often eat the fruit), swamp apple, corkwood, bobwood, and monkey apple. Unlike the other Annona species, the pulp of the fruit when ripe is yellow through orange instead of whitish. The fruit itself smells so amazing but the flavors leaves little to be desired for. Doesn’t look like much but this surely makes me happy. First pond apple (Annona glabra) from a tree that I planted from seed. Unfortunately didn’t reach its full since thanks to a super windy day yesterday but this just means that abundance is right around the corner. I actually chose to grow this more for the seeds than the fruit as I read that eternal can be made from the seeds. This pond Apple (Annona glabra) has been flowering for a year but it seems like it may finally hold its first fruit! They’re not the most enjoyable of the annona a but still grown from seed and I for sure will enjoy the energy put into the growth of each and every fruit. Native to tropical America from southern Florida to Argentina and Peru. Grows naturally in West Africa and I’ve seen acres of these growing wild here in Haiti. Occurs often in swamps or along rivers and lakes. Although this tree is not cultivated for its fruit, as they are of inferior quality compared with closely related species of the same family, they can be used as rootstock for other Annona species. The tree requires a humid tropical environment and can withstand prolonged flooding and waterlogged soils. The pulp can still be eaten fresh with a fruity, agreeable taste reminiscent of banana and overripe pineapple. I personally think they taste like red ants. And before you ask, I was an only child growing up on a farm. I’m sure many of you have tasted an ant at least once in your life.
