I'm soooo glad that Firebeetle telling Shade that Gravel abandoned them came back to bite him (even if he's unconscious rn oops)

Oh yeah that whole fight was a direct consequence of that scene. I put that scene there specifically to plant this idea in Shade’s brain that Gravel could never love them because Gravel didn’t care for them enough to be around from the start. Then Gravel shows up and starts telling a whole other story, and Shade doesn’t know what to do about it. There’s a deep, fundamental insecurity and feeling of “I’m not good enough, that’s why, because they don’t think I’m good enough” in Shade’s mind that came from that conversation/their childhood, and a deep-seated grudge that manifests out of it. Now that Gravel is actually here and can speak for themself, turns out that wasn’t the reason at all! Shade does not know what to feel about it :(

for years I've remembered that part in runaway max where Billy lights a cat on fire, and I've only read the book once 2 years ago when i got it so i started it again today and tell me how i missed the fact that Max says she would kill cats at her dads place. Black cats in specific.

That family owes cats a huge apology cuz damn.

I was the anon with the feral cat colony awhile back -- I hid 'cause I wasn't sure how you'd react. But! I wanted to pop in and say that it's hard enough to track lineages when only considering the mamas -- Which I do, to the best of my ability. I can't imagine trying to figure out which kittens are sired by what tom. THANKFULLY, this spring the litters are spaced far enough apart there's a decent size difference between 'em.

Dave has 4 possible fathers that I know of, based on the cats around the farm and their genetics. Tippy, Nibs (both solid black w/ low white), Tommy (brown tabby), or Mean Neighbour Cat (orange tabby w/ medium/high white). I think that Dave and Keke (grey kittens) are sired by Tommy, and Beans and Marshmallow (calibys) are sired by Mean Neighbour Cat.

Thankfully there aren’t too many male cats around the farm like we have had in previous years, so at least we don’t have an uncontrollable population boom right now. Grandma tries to keep female cats since they are less likely to fight, and therefore need emergency medical attention, but the neighbours keep getting toms, and I think a couple people have dumped pets here as well. It’s hard to keep track of all the cats, but I like to try because 1) genetics are fun and 2) If theres any new mollies I want my grandma to get them spayed or removed from the property ASAP.

Best of luck with your litters this year. Hopefully the kittens grow up safe and can find some good indoor homes instead of roughing it outdoors. :(

No wonder cats don't like us, some of our most notable moments in world history involve us just utterly fucking over cats. The streets of France are haunted by festivals of torturing cats in mock trials, the pyramids are stuffed with their bodies... jfc how have they not revolted against us yet
