continued from here
She remembered, remembered when they had came to her. From the shadows as if they were demons of some sort. They could have taken her, kidnapped her right there on the spot, yet they didn’t. They knew better, for the man who loved her dearly would hunt them down and to the ends of the earth had they simply taken her. No, they wanted to make this much more simple. They approached her, wearing grins of mischief. She almost had the urge to run that day, but they prevented her from doing so. She had no idea what to do, should she have screamed? It was then that they told her, explained to her that they knew. They knew everything about Germain or at least most of it. They knew he was an immortal man. Apparently, they had been tracking her for some time and finally found her. They had watched them and learned that Germain was no ordinary human. It made sense how he was able to steal her away from Burlone. They explained all of this to her and her eyes couldn’t help but grow wide.
She knew what this could mean. They told her that they were going to expose him to all of Burlone and possibly the rest of the world. That he was a man who could not die. She froze, her heart beating hard and loudly against her chest. She knew if such a thing were to happen, all hell would break loose. Those people who had knowledge they shouldn’t, surely Idea was going to hunt them all down and kill them. They would know something they were never meant to know. Her vision blurred, hearing the screams of those who would suffer and die should this secret get out. They told Lily that if she came with them willingly, making sure Germain wouldn’t follow, that they would keep the secret. What choice did she have? Yet, what could she possibly do in order to make sure he wouldn’t come after her? Any and all thoughts or ideas she had didn’t seem to work. Her chest hurt and she felt ill. There was something she could do, yet just the thought of it made her want to faint. She’d have to throw it all away.
That was how she found herself here, speaking these untruthful words to him. Choking on air as she called him a monster and told him she didn’t love him anymore. How she wished he’d see through the lies, realize that something was wrong. Her back was turned to him. She knew if she turned to look at him her lies would unravel and she would break down. Even though every piece of her was slowly shattering. As soon as she heard his voice filled with such agony, she could feel her legs trembling lightly. She was grateful her dress was able to hide that, but even still, she felt as though she’d collapse. He begged her to stay, begged her to tell him what he had done. She was choking, holding back any and all tears that threatened to fall. She couldn’t even answer him, fearing that her voice would crack under the pressure. She had to do this, to protect him, to protect her home and many other people. Yet, it was destroying her, eating away at her very being having to tell him these lies.
When her legs finally moved her to walk out the door of their cottage, all the memories flooded into her mind. When they met, the night on the balcony, the day she shot that man, when they first kissed, first made love, and everything else. She thought she was going to trip and fall right there, but she tried to push herself as the carriage awaiting her came closer and closer into view. Her hearing left her, everything was faded out as if everything that surrounded her had dulled and wasn’t real. Her blood was running cold and she could feel the last pieces of her heart trailing behind her with each step she took. When he called out to her, begged her, how she wanted nothing more then to turn around and run to him. To hold him and apologize for the words she spoke. To tell him it was all a lie and that she’d never hurt him in such a way. In a way, she was almost surprised he believed her, hoping that he would have known she was lying. Yet, she had tried to make it as believable as possible. Especially with the fact that she was now going to be leaving their home.
Her body went numb as she entered the carriage and the door shut behind her. The inside was so dark, so cold. So devoid of the life and love that she had just left behind. As she sat there she fell deadly silent. Her eyes stared off into nothing. She felt the carriage move, but she felt heavier than an anchor. The light and sparkle that was once in her emerald hues was dimming and filling with a darkness, a void. She wasn’t even sure if she was breathing anymore, not even sure if she was alive. It all felt like a nightmare, like a bad dream she wished to wake up from. Waking up in their warm bed and being cradled by the love of her life. Crying into him as he comforted her and told her it was nothing but a bad dream, but as they got further and further away from her home, her love, it all became too real. She had gone so numb that she hadn’t realized the massive amount of tears that were spilling down her cheeks and dropping onto her folded hands below in her lap. Chase after her, save her from this nightmare. How she wished to hear him calling out for her once more.
How much time had passed? She didn’t know and before she knew it she was aboard a train heading back to her hometown of Burlone. All this, because she was the key maiden. The Bishop Josef is apparently who she would be meeting and speaking too once they got back. She didn’t talk, didn’t eat. No matter how much her escort tried to get her to do anything, she simply wouldn’t budge. It was like the life had been drained from her completely. All she could hear was Germain’s heart breaking. She had promised to never hurt him, yet she had done just that. It was perhaps the first time in her whole life that the world felt so cold and empty. Nothing felt right anymore, everything seemed foreign. Even when they arrived in Burlone, she was brought to her room. Yet, she stood there, staring blankly around the room. It wasn’t until everything finally hit her that she broke down and fell into a deep despair. She cried as though she had never cried before. The hole in her heart had fully swallowed her whole. She would never see his face again now would she?
