I’m not a writer but even I understand how good the OG show was at showing us exactly who these characters are in the first few minutes of the first episode. The fact that they changed those scenes in the live action, where Katara shows the audience just who she is, tells you exactly what the problem with this adaptation is.
In the animated show Katara sees a boy in the iceberg, sees that he’s alive and knows she has to get him out of there. She knows she has to do everything she can to help that person she doesn’t even know! She doesn’t even think twice, doesn’t consider the dangers of hitting a giant glowing iceberg in the middle of nowhere. She grabs Sokka’s weapon and gives it her EVERYTHING to save this person. Because that’s who she fucking is! She’s compassionate, she’s strong willed, she will give it her all to help the people in need. And that’s what you get in those 2 minutes of the show.
As a writer, how do you press delete on all of that, and instead make Katara try to return their boat and accidentally free Aang from the iceberg? She frees him unknowingly. What do we learn about Katara from the scene? Absolutely fucking nothing.
I have absolutely no faith in the next two seasons unless they bring in competent writers.
