Fear is a natural reaction, it helps can help keep someone alive in dire circumstances. Keep fighting on just that bit longer. But it can be turned into a weapon, forced to confront the deepest horrors the human psyche can conjure, helpless in the face of it all.

And Player could only watch on in horror as Carmen teetered on the edge, so close to giving in to the faculty for his sake. Give up everything just so he can walk free. He couldn’t even begin to imagine what must be going through her mind, how scared she must be. She was facing death without a single break in composure. And yet all Player could do was shake, freeze up, become a liability. He wished so hard he could have even an ounce of her fearlessness, her ability to remain calm even at the precipice of her own demise. Maybe he wouldn’t be here, now, if he was.

And they met eyes, stared at each other for a moment, and Player could see in the depths that Carmen was afraid, was just as much terrified of the coming moments as he was. But she smiled, soft and warm against the cold cruelty.

“Don’t be afraid Player, I’ll get you out of here.”

And he believed her.
