[blog] Death Jib 9000 (DIY Camera Crane)
I bought a new DSLR! So I wanted to buy a portable jib, or camera crane, to get some cool floaty shots. Unfortunately, the lower-end, cheapest jibs you can find start at around the $300 mark. I looked around, found this design by Oliviatech.com (http://oliviatech.com/how-to-make-a-diy-camera-jib), and decided to build one myself.
completed (w/out tripod):
Awesome. It was way cheaper building it. Pretty simple design, and easy enough DIY instructions that a beginner like me could follow along. Since I don’t really have much experience with power tools, everything was pretty new to me. Luckily, my brother and brother-in-law both had some power tools for me to use, my brother helped cut some tubes with a saw, and my cousins even helped me drill a few holes. The only problem is that it’s still pretty dangerous to operate (hence the name, “Death Jib 9000”, o.O). I haven’t sanded down the sharp edges yet, so I think I’ll need to work on it some more.
I had to start over a few times, but I ultimately saved roughly $125. Plus, I have the satisfaction of owning and using something that I built myself.
I guess it would be used best on moving angles that establish the setting (the shots that begin the scenes). Although my jib isn’t perfect, the shots I was able to capture were pretty decent, and the movement was smooth enough. I can still improve it even more though with enough time/ adjustments.
Pretty fun project! Hopefully this leads to some cool short-films and music videos! We’ll see how that goes, haha.
