Inspired by Art Portrait - Project Plan
My aim is to produce 2 photographs which emulate portraiture by the Dutch Masters from the Golden Age. One is to be produced in a studio setting and one on location.
My objectives for this Inspired by Art project are to:
Create 2 fine art portraits
Develop research and communication skills
Develop a critically-informed approach to photographic practice
Develop studio lighting skills
Work collaboratively with a partner (model)
Analyse portraiture and photography
Successfully use props and materials
I researched both photographers and artists to get a feel of what I would be looking to do. After researching some of the recommended photographers and artists I found the two paintings that I wanted to recreate.
1. “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer

2. “Portrait of a Man” by Jan Van Eyck

I was attracted to the first image because of the bright colours, pleasing composition and the very distinct separation of the subject from the dark background. I was drawn to the dark colours and serious facial expression in the second image, it made me curious about the man in the image.
I think these portraits would have been seen in a family home for the generations of the family after them would know what their ancestors looked like and who they were. In those days paintings were created as there was no photography.
The lighting used in the first painting was 45 degree lighting, and Vermeer has used effective composition and framing to make the painting more interesting. The use of the bright colours in the head dress, clothing and earring help to bring the painting to light and catch the viewer’s eye. Whereas in the second painting, I found that the 45 degree lighting was very soft and this was to add to the dark and shadowy effect of the image. The deep red and dark colour create a sense of mystery and intrigue.
1. “Girl with a Pearl Earring” - Studio
For this photograph I will experiment with the lighting techniques and angles. I also might have to try using reflectors to achieve the correct lighting. I am bringing the following props and materials: scarf, jacket, pillow case, bed sheet, snood, earring.
2. “Portrait of a Man” - Location
For this photograph I will have to experiment a lot with light, diffusing the light and a DIY background. I will use the following props and materials: coat, blanket, bed sheet, t-shirt.
