Hello writeblr! You are all cordially invited to attend Positivity Prom!

What is Positivity Prom?

Every week I will post a prompt that will allow writers the opportunity to talk about something positive about their work. All you have to do is reblog the prompt with your response! Or respond in tags if that makes you feel more comfortable. This event is for YOU. The point is to help you think about your strengths as a writer and things that make you proud or excited about your writing. While you are welcome to discuss things you are hoping to improve on, try to avoid any negativity! Writing can be a very lonely and discouraging experience that invites a lot of self-doubt and self-criticism. This is your time to lift your spirits and recognize how far you've come as a writer and all the wonderful abilities that you have to offer.

Can I participate if I don't write original fiction?

Of course! Whether you write fan fiction, poetry or short stories, you can participate! I will also write separate prompts for those who write in these forms, as all prompts may not apply to you and I want everyone to feel included. Even if you don't have a WIP or are still trying your hand at writing, this event is for you too!

Can I respond to prompts from previous weeks?

You sure can! Again, this event is for you. If you see a prompt on your blog that you're dying to answer, go ahead and answer it!

I will be reblogging people's responses as well to spread the positivity on my blog. And each week I will choose 2-4 blogs to be Prom Royals for that week. This will NOT depend on how popular your post was or how popular your blog is. This isn’t a contest, but instead a chance to highlight different people in the community and what makes them proud about their writing. Different blogs will be chosen each week, but if you’re chosen once that doesn’t mean you can’t be chosen again!

positivity prom wk 8 . for me, it’s usually the other way around! written stuff & ideas inspire creations - but a big part in inspiring writing as a whole for me is ~aesthetics~ so it’s almost full circle? aesthetic pics inspire writing which inspires creations using those aes pics haha. this was definitely one of those instances; i’ve been trying to play up a lot of contrasts between the descriptions of the natural world & the i guess...stark truth? of what’s going on in terms of a war so i definitely had that in mind when putting the graphics together!

[ROT.]

i. Genevieve didn’t understand why she was still alive.

ii. (Her master had said - she’d seen - what the enemy did. To people like her. She remembered when her master brought Klaus back, after the oldest apprentice she knew had been captured. What remained of him.)

iii. (The smell had been overwhelming: a spill of entrails. A bloom of rot. A scream of ash. And what had been left of his flesh had been- 

-it was like he’d been crushed from the inside out. Like even gravity had turned on him. Like a sun had exploded in slow motion in that space scraped against his sternum and rasped beyond his heart, until his skin had boiled and blistered and sloughed right off his bones.)

iv. (Like his body had been some monstrously overripe fruit, soft and mottled and scorched over in blood and viscera, and something had burst inside him as his soul wept out of the remains - the way that pus ooze-slithered out of a cut-open corpse.)

v. The golden-haired man who had brought her back was a wizard, so he knew what she was. What she could do. And she could not - would not - be fooled by-

-by how she was completely unguarded. By how there was a frilly sofa pushed against the far wall, covered in a mussed, obviously-slept-upon pile of fluffy blankets and cream puff-pillows. By how the roses blossoming over the wallpaper were the same shade of pink as the stupid satin robe this wizard had put her in, or how there were two cups of tea on the bedside table: one that laced the air with wafts of chamomile and citrus, and another that whisper-floated with sugar and honey-milk.

vi. She would not be fooled by the clean bandages, or the dissipating ache in her ribs, or - or- 

-or by the way his touch felt like spun silk, and how his words tasted like mercy.

[PURITY.]

i. The airship bucked, swerving in midair. 

ii. The mage - whose face Alejandro could not see from this distance - blasted a crash of pure, blinding light toward Chris. It seared at Alejandro’s winter-forged irises like sunlight. Purer than sunlight, more concentrated. As if sunlight had been sharpened and shrilled off glass until it smoldered when it came in contact with living things.

iii. It was - familiar. 

(That was not a good thing.)

iv. Alejandro plunged toward the tumbling airship and met the light with frost, a blizzard’s worth of it, stormed over in fractaled capillaries of ice. Chris leapt out of the way, over the railing, his parachute billowing up and out, and the mage-

-twisted away, jolted back like he’d been burned. Skidded across the deck, all the way to the edge, dangling over the edge. Scrabbled for purchase against the railing-

-missed.

Alejandro was fast. 

Not fast enough.

 i. Violet rivers of smoke. Blossoms of smother-slithering sweetness, and a heat he could taste.

ii. It was Chris who found him with the dead apprentice.

i. Alejandro caught the mage’s body in his winter-clawed talons like a bird-of-prey snapping up a fish that had leapt too high.

A fish that had leapt for the sun: silver-burnt scales and the ricocheting shine of daylight, and blood like freshwater pearls raked scarlet.

ii. The dragon’s moon-shimmering wings swooped into his shoulder blades. The spines jutted out of his back like icicles melded themselves into his backbone.

As soon as Alejandro had hands again, he tried to stop the bleeding.

i. The apprentice’s torso was veined in ash. His flesh had been-

-devoured, was the only word Alejandro had for it. Charred and gilded and blackened in something like flame; something purer, something sharper.

ii. There was blood and ice and ash. And his eyes: two feverish-bright moons under a brilliant blue sky. 

iii. The sun swept lily-tender fingers across the murmuring grass in a gold-veiled caress, like it was waving goodbye.

@chickadee-djarin You always make such interesting and well written stories. Whether it's fanfic or your original writing I always enjoy reading your work. Looking forward to reading the next part of your Mandalorian series. I just know it will be great.

@talesfromaurea I love your take on classic fantasy. Your characters seem real and have their own motives and backstories that add to the story. I also love your worldbuilding as you describe it so well I feel like I'm a actually there. Your fight scenes are also well written and bring out the intensity that puts me at the edge of my seat.

@hellishhin Sadie's story is the perfect mix of classic/dnd and the inversion of cliches. It has the perfect adventurer vibes with the added story of a unconventional hero. I also was really enjoying reading about your tribes and would love to see the story you write with them.

@talesfromgringolandia You so talented at many different genres. From your recent zombie funeral which was so moving. To your stories about the people going to help the Titanic, which felt so realistic and like I was actually there. To your stories about Bo and Shen and about Venus. I always enjoy your writing.

@drippingmoon Aquiver, Aglow is a amazing tale. The interactions between Tyrone, Anne and Mother are always great. I also love when you write Anne with the stars. She seems so soft yet strong around them.

I'm sure I missed a few. There are so many great writers on here it is hard to keep track.

Oh goodness, this might get a little long but here we go!  Thank you @inkovert for hosting this event, as always

@sagasofazeria - stories based on ttrpg buddies!  I love that your story takes all the goodness that we all know and love from dnd and makes it your own.  All the unique takes you have on the worldbuilding is so fascinating and I can see how much thought and care you put into building this wonderful game to enjoy with your friends.  The characters are charming and just the right amount of mysterious to make you wonder what they’re all about

@hellishhin - stories based on ttrpg buddies!  Sadie is such a great character, taking a bunch of traits you don’t normally see in a fantasy adventure main character and saying “hey, she can do it too!” (and do it with style lbr here).  The older I get, the more and more I appreciate characters like her and she’s just so complex and interesting to boot.  And the stuff you’ve shared about the other world you built?  Sooo intriguing, I still think about the eagle tribe randomly sometimes, that’s how much it stuck in my mind

@oh-no-another-idea - wow “The Invisible Girl” is just such a unique and cool idea, I’m completely invested in it.  And your writing style compliments the story so, so well.  Every character has me intrigued (but Velia is still my fave...) and I love reading the excerpts you share in tag games to learn more about them!

@ashen-crest - your stories have this special vibe that I have trouble articulating but that I adore.  Whimsical and magical but laced with raw emotions - that’s the best way I can describe it!  Queen of adorable trios who you can’t help but root for. I can’t wait to have your books on my shelf one day

@writeblrfantasy - you are so full of ideas I don’t know where it all comes from! It’s absolutely amazing.  The way you write romance is so captivating - all at once beautiful and tender and raw and heartbreaking.  I don’t normally read romance but whoaaa I’ll read yours!  Plus, the worldbuilding you have going on as the backdrop to your stories?  Just fantastic

@drippingmoon - every excerpt I’ve read of “Aquiver, Aglow” has this delicate, ethereal quality that I’ve never really seen before and it fits the story so incredibly well.  When I think of your writing, I think of vivid descriptions and an unmatched mood

@a-wild-bloog - I haven’t read too much of your work yet but what I have read of “Through the Eyes of the Aether” has me charmed and wanting more!  I’m 100% sure I’m gonna love Laura and Saeed (I mean I already do, let’s just be honest here...haha)  And your worldbuilding is so unique and I can’t wait to learn more about it through the course of the story

@avaeverstone - “Heroic” is such a fun story!  Dusk/Drake has such a strong, goofy personality and seeing how Cleo, him, and Sword all interact (or clash, as the case may be) is very entertaining.  Also, the names of your chapters?  Amazing

@artbyeloquent - I look forward to the new page of “Inscribed” every week!  Your art style fits the story, with the brilliant colors and intricate details.  And your character design just pulls me in and makes me wonder “hey I want to know more about this person”.  I can’t wait until we properly meet the other characters and get into the meat of the story - I’m so intrigued!  

@lunewell - I’m new to your work but “Natura” has me captivated!  A horror/mystery revolving around the workers at an antiques shop?  Sign me up!  The premise, the vibes, the setting, the characters (!!) it’s all got me so interested and wanting to know more

@magic-is-something-we-create - your descriptions!! Wow, the way you write descriptions is honestly something else.  And the fact that you build entire worlds, with unique flora and fauna and complex histories/magic systems/etc.  It just blows me away

positivity prom week 9: world-building

What is an aspect(s) of your world building that makes you really proud (e.g. customs, language, species)? How did the idea come about?

I love that Dawn’s goal is to get onto the fantasy business magazine’s “30 Under 130″ list of young entrepreneurs. That’s all.

Positivity Prom week 2

I love yelling about my OCs, so this week’s prompt was so exciting to see! 

So far, the character I've had the most 'voila' moments with lately is one of the main characters of my urban fantasy WIP Written in Ink, a vampire hunter named Amy Sherwin. Since my method of character development is to create a mental construct of them physically, and then have imaginary conversations with them until I learn what makes them tick, it's always an adventure in the first few weeks of development, but Amy has been by far the one with the most surprises up her sleeve. She started out being the character I knew least about. Since my worldbuilding for Written in Ink treats the events and characters of "Dracula" as historical (albeit with names changed to protect their real identities) I had decided on the detail of her being a descendant of "John Seward" and from that idea, the only thing I knew about her was that she used a small tape recorder to make her action reports, in the same way Seward uses a phonograph in the novel. Once she started talking to me, though, she hasn't STOPPED. I learned a huge amount about Amy in the space of a week. First off, the fact that her mother's side of the family is Indonesian, and when her great-grandmother was taken to the Netherlands by her abusive husband, a colonial administrator, she ran away from him, found her way to a hunter agency there, and trained under the man who was known as Van Helsing, as one of his last students. (This lightbulb moment was followed by me checking out a copious amount of library books on Indonesian martial arts and the matriarchal culture of the Minangkabau tribe; I love when I learn new things thanks to my characters.) I also learned that Amy uses the tape recorder because she has dyslexia and writing is hard for her. She was bitten by a vampire a couple years before the book starts and has been infected with the venom that will cause her to turn when she dies, and has made the choice to ask her partner to stake her if she's ever killed in action, so she doesn't turn into the same kind of thing she's spent her life fighting, an angsty detail that becomes very relevant to the story (although not in a Major Character Death kind of way). My favorite detail about her, though, is that despite the fact that she's a vampire hunter she dresses in a style that has led people to refer to her as a refugee from a Studio Ghibli movie. I love the fact that she's a competent, badass hunter who still enjoys embracing her feminine side. She's an eclectic, many-layered character who is already turning out to be an absolute delight to write, and I've never had so much fun bringing together so many disparate elements into one cohesive role!

Positivity Prom: Week 2

I'm not really that much of an OC creator. The only reason I have OCs is from table top roleplaying games and if any of you know me, ya'll know I'm gonna talk about Sadie. I know I've been a little quiet about her lately but I just need to get this semester finished. I have plans to go back to her soon (but I might not share it for a while we'll see how progress goes).

Anyway, I'm super proud of how I created Sadie because I was getting tired of the typical D&D characters: backstory fridges chock-full, buff/lithe, young, in it for revenge/murder. Not that these are bad characters at all, hell I've made plenty of those characters in my time and still will because I love myself an emo lady who learns to love.

But this time I came into it thinking I wanted a happy, thicc/chunky/curvy, round face, middle-aged woman who is ready to adventure. She's also not in it for revenge or murder, she literally just wants to be able to tell great stories. If there's an opportunity to get into trouble so she can tell someone and have them not believe her because the story is too outlandish, she absolutely will do whatever it is. She honestly enjoys it when people don't believe her stories because she knows its true so their disbelief is funny to her. (Unless she's trying to get the church to believe that their goddess herself forgave her then she gets pissed when they don't believe her and want to kill her in the name of that goddess).

She also had a dream to become a mother and fulfilled that dream older than most. Stereotypical adventurers don't have children but Sadie has 3ish (more but complicated) and still is fighting a war. She got married later than most people expect to as well. Overall, she is the epitome of "your life doesn't end when you turn 30" and I think that's a really important message.

I'm just proud that the character I made to break stereotypes is my longest running character and the character I love the most.

Positivity Prom: Week 2

Prompt: Which of your OC creations are you most proud of? Did you write a very complex backstory or character arc for them that took extensive planning? Were you able to dream up and describe their appearance with impressively precise detail (bonus if you have drawn them and share a pic!?)?

So. After much thought it is, from Frost & Fire,

Zerve!

And Enna!

I'm picking two, alright?!

Here's the two of them, together. Not my proudest work and i need to fix a few things (I say a few, but I forgot Zerve's scales and Enna's wings), but:

Now I can infodump.

Zerve Galendel:

I did write a pretty detailed backstory for them, but it's not as complex as Enna's. And when I made them- since they are Ana & Redari's sibling- I knew pretty much what they looked like. Only one arm, (They have a prosthetic which is attached to their armor. I still need to figure out the exact logistics of it, but essentially when in their armor Zerve can use both hands for stuff) half silver half black hair, brown skin, blue eyes with draconic pupils.

Enna Helder-Kromlin:

I have Enna fully fleshed out. I've always known what they look like. Blue skin, Blue-black hair, green eyes. Sometimes wings. They can summon them and unsummon them at will, with some limitations. She's cool. Her backstory is fully complete, and somehow more sad than Zerve's- whose mother died believing them to be dead- or Ana's- who watched her mother burn to death.

Character Arc:

I also know what their character arc is. Zerve starts out angry at their father, Gilanthas. For good reason. Zerve's envious towards Redari & Ana, seeing them as their replacement. Eventually they start talking to Enna and develop a friendly rivalry with her, the two doing a sort of Legolas and Gimli style of comparing their kill counts each fight. It's cute. Eventually, after Halmire burns down, Ana and Redari and Cerea are busy with a bit of devil-ic possession. Which throws in a few issue's and brings up Enna's past.

And who's the expert at traumatic pasts here (Since Ana is busy and Anne is presumed dead)? Zerve. Who lets Enna talk to them, and also gives her a hug, which Enna desperately needed. Over the course of the second book (Silver & Swords), they get closer and Zerve is the first person since Anne to know the entirety of Enna's backstory. And Zerve tells Enna why they were assumed dead. Then Enna realises, in her typical ace way- that oh shit she's in love with Zerve. Zerve does the same. It's cute. Both of them are oblivious. Anne thinks its hilarious. And it's the only romance based character arc in the book.
