"How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?" "Four." "And if the Party says that it is not four but five--then how many?" "Four." The word ended in a gasp of pain.

When the dictionary trolls the president.
My fam was watching Hacksaw Ridge and I bailed cuz I was like nah I'm not really into this and the cinematography is real distracting And my fam were like "Uh this is a fantastic movie it's up for best film CLEARLY the cinematography is fantastic??" like no brah you just like, buy oscars like it's not even a secret dude they don't even try to hide it and they got SO MAD and kept telling me that's just "an opinion" and they're entitled to believe it's based on talent, then refused to look at anything I tried to show them that said otherwise and kept patronisingly telling me I needed to be open to being wrong like???? What??? I didn't even say it was bad lol I just said it's clearly a war-plot movie not a film-technique movie so I don't waste my time. Like Jesus, what kinda parents tell their abused child rape jokes and get mad when I don't laugh but when I mention a well-known fact about a topic they openly admit they know nothing about suddenly start rioting in the streets about the beauty of this shittily filmed patriot-porn like c'mon brah get it together. I don't know where to even start with coaxing them back to reality?? I'm not looking forward to having so many conversations like this in our "post-fact" world but at least my family has the decency to teach me to be abundantly patient and tolerant by having an incredibly limited supply of both of those things.

The key word here is blackwhite. Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary.
George Orwell, 1984, in Goldstein’s book
The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command....And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right. The obvious, the silly, and the true had got the be defended. Truisms are true, hold on to that! The solid world exists, its laws do not change. Stones are hard, water is wet, objects unsupported fall toward the earth's center.
George Orwell, 1984
Everything melted into mist. Sometimes, indeed, you could put your finger on a definite lie....But you could prove nothing.
