Centuries ago, scientists and explorers began to collect botanical, zoological and geological specimens in part because they were fascinating and in part ...
“The museum plans to hire a curator of the Anthropocene in January. In a turnabout from the usual, the exhibition focuses on... climate change, pollution, extinction, habitat alteration and post-natural history.”
FIVE: Designing Media Ecology / Issue 6: The Anthropocene and our Post-natural Future
I’m delighted to have contributed a short paper “‘Planetary’ Knowledge? Moving Beyond Internationalism” to one of the most intellectually exciting magazines from Tokyo. FIVE: Designing Media Ecology Issue 6 is on The Anthropocene and our Post-natural Future, edited by Prof Osamu Sakura (Evolutionary Biology and Science Communication) and the artist Andrew Yang. [The editorial board: + Prof Shin Mizukoshi (Socio-Media Studies) and Prof Yoshitaka Mōri (Sociology and Cultural Studies)] 今最も面白いマガジンの一つ、ファイブに英論文「”惑星的”知識?
I wrote the piece with a hope to not only contribute to the beginning of the Anthropocene debates in the context of Japanese historiography on cultures of nature -- but also to critically re-assess and potentially revise our methods of theoretical knowledge practice and integration that are still too often trapped in the ‘West-to-East’ imperial conception. Please let me know if you are interested; I look forward to any suggestions and feedbacks.
For information on both paper and electronic editions, please visit: http://www.fivedme.org/ Some of the featured papers, including mine, will also be accessible through Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin’s online database in the near future. But ideally, the magazine should be read as a whole!
Lastly but not the least, thanks to the editors, fellow contributors, and everyone who was involved in the making!
The Center for PostNatural History’s mission is to collect, document, and study living organisms that have been intentionally altered by people. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and founded by artist and Carnegie Mellon professor, Richard Pell, the Center is the result of years of research and an art project slowly transforming into a tiny and unique museum.
