Where: The Foxhole Court | PSU Date: Thursday, February 7th Time: 7:45 AM Status: Closed to @cartermaddx
“Walsh! Maddox!”
Wymack’s voice snaps the words at them like a whip from across the court, his dislike of repeating himself lacing annoyance across the surface. “Did I stutter? Get moving, or I will make you move.”
Sterling scowls from inside his helmet, feet dragging as he halfheartedly trots towards the coned-off square that Carter’s standing in. Avoiding Carter has certainly made dealing with what happened at the banquet easier, but the relief dissipates like steam when he steps into the square. His pulse kicks. He’s never had a problem with this drill or with the physicality it demands as the defensive players try to keep the strikers from reaching the other side of the square, but Wymack’s whistle screams shrilly over the court to indicate their start and Sterling is still a good two feet away from his mark.
It’s hard to look at Carter, nevermind look him in the eye. He hasn’t said anything but ‘hey’ or ‘heads up’ to him since he bolted from the elevator.
He readies - bending his knees enough to move side to side effectively, and and extending his arms out to either side of himself to block more space. Dropping his chin, he looks up at Carter from under his brows, expression stern and focused. Shuttered. The scuffs of shoes on the floor and sounds of effort fill the court, barely audible over the pounding in Sterling’s ears.
Where: The Vixen Den Date: Friday, January 11th Time: 8:13 PM Status: Closed to @girlgoddessmars
It still feels a little strange to walk off campus to get to the Vixen Den during daylight hours. Over the years, it’s a place Sterling’s ventured to primarily for the purpose of attending parties, and not much else; usually the walk over is characterized by a slight haze of pregame alcohol and the company of other Foxes, and he’s certainly made the trip back when drunk and worse for wear, but walking there when the sun is still out is off-putting.
Walking there after going out of his way to get a slushee and having to carry it all the way back is just plain annoying. But it’s easier than trying to buy an ounce around campus.
He knows better than to knock on the front door of the Den and passes through without paying any mind to anyone who spots him on the way to Mars and Patch’s room. A perfunctory knock, and he’s pushing into the room without hardly a beat between, and the announcement that, “They were out of strawberry Pocky so I got you the regular kind, because the green tea suck and I wouldn’t do that to you.” He glances up from sipping his own slushee - a combination of two different colors that’s melting faster than he’d like - and slides his backpack off, and the telltale crinkle of chip bags rustles from inside. “What we smoking?”
Where: Winter Banquet | Edgar Allen University Exy Court Date: Saturday, December 15th Time: 9:27 PM Status: Closed to @rosietommasi
There’s a lot of people at the banquet, just like always, bodies thick even in the huge space of the Nest’s Olympic-sized court. The dark colors, mitigated as they are with the upscale winter-themed decorations, do nothing to alleviate the sensation of weight in the building, of expectation and judgment pressing down on them from all directions. He feels it every time they’re here, when the stadium lights are at full-blast, but it’s worse when they’re dimmed for the sake of the banquet, when the seats disappear up into darkness around them. Maybe the fact that they’re going to playoffs adds to it - impossibly, they have more to prove, more to lose.
A lot of people are wearing dark colors - the Ravens are sporting copies of the same black outfits, as usual, moving like a thundercloud through the banquet - but a good amount of them aren’t. And within those, the whole spectrum of glitter and gloss and impressive fits, there’s really only one color, one dress that keeps catching his attention, a bright orange lighthouse beacon in a sea of bodies. Looking at someone has never made his chest feel this way before - like the genuine exhilaration of twisting down a slide at top speed when he was a kid, like the first time he pushed his bike over 50 mph, like the first time he read his name on a television screen. He feels yearning in his stomach like a gravity, feels the urge to touch her like an ache in his palms. Every time they put distance between them it makes the night stretch impossibly long out in front of him.
He glances up from where he’s pouring some garishly red punch into a cup - looking for her feels like scratching an itch, satisfying but somehow insufficient in the way that he knows he’s just going to want to do it again and again - and notices her mingling through the crowd. He manages to watch for just long enough that his hand slides to the side and starts spilling the punch across the table, some of it spattering across the floor. A sound at his side pulls his attention away long enough for him to realize what he’s doing, and he looks over to see Rosie standing next to him.
“My bad,” he says, pushing the cup into her hand and stretching down the table to grab a set of napkins to start mopping up the mess.
