Inspiring Women: 

                            Maria Quitéria (1792-1853)

Maria Quitéria de Jesus was a brazilian lieutenant and national heroine. She served in the Brazilian Independence War in 1822–23 dressed as a man.

She has been called "Brazilian Joan of Arc," and has become a kind of national legendary figure. Quitéria was the first woman to serve in a military unit in Brazil. She, along with Maria Felipa de Oliveira and Sister Joana Angélica, are known as the three Bahian women resistance fighters in the War of Independence against the Portuguese. Against her father's will, Maria Quitéria enlisted in the Brazilian army, as a man, in October 1822. Until June 1823, she fought in several battles against the Portuguese in Bahia, where she lived. Maria Quitéria's father outed her as a woman once he discovered her betrayal—but because of her skill in battle, she was allowed to continue to fight.

She was promoted to cadet in July 1823, and then to lieutenant in August, where she was received and decorated by the Emperor.

About the decade:

Inspiring Women:

                            Virdimura of Sicily (1376)

Virdimura was a Jewish woman who worked as a physician in Sicily. At the time, mostwomen were forbidden to practice medicine, although in Italy the rules were more lax than in other regions. Virdimura, eager to build a lawful practice and win recognition for her healing abilities, petitioned the court for the right to treat patients as a professional.

As part of the hearing process, she brought in patients who attested to her great knowledge and skill, as well as other physicians who verified her learning and supported her petition. Virdimura also had to take several exams to determine the extent of her knowledge, which she passed easily. Thus in 1376, she was fortunate enough to have the Sicilian royal court grant her a license to practice medicine throughout the state. She chose not to work among the wealthy nobles who could afford to pay her well, but instead healed the poor of Sicily, often for free or for a very reduced fee.

A legendary innovator and a tireless entrepreneur, Miss Elizabeth Arden established the American beauty industry a century ago. 

Born Florence Nightingale Graham, she traveled from rural Canada to New York City, where she opened the first Red Door salon on Fifth Avenue in 1910. By the 1930s, Miss Arden had opened Red Door salons in the majority of the fashion capitals around the globe, and proudly acknowledged her accomplishments by proclaiming that there were only three American names known in every corner of the globe: Singer Sewing Machines, Coca-Cola and Elizabeth Arden.

Through it all, Miss Arden created both an empire and a new industry. Her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to innovation, quality and excellence remain the soul of the company today.

Day 4 - YVONNE DUPUIS

Full Name: Yvonne Louise Dupuis

Yvonne is the feminine form of Yvon, which is derived from the French meaning "yew". Since yew wood was used for bows, the name is usually related to  "archer".

About the Decade:

During the 40's women's roles and expectations in society were changing rapidly. Previously women had very little say in society and were stereotyped: stay home, make babies, be a good homemaker and wife. The 1940's were different, life for women was expanding, the men were at war and some one had to step up and take the men's place. But not only men were going to war either, the war was so big that in 1942 The Women's Army Corps (WAC) and Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services (WAVES).

On Paris,  a city that had been significantly “feminised” since many of its menfolk had been captured or killed at the front, women often faced the occupier alone. The true extent of resistance among women will never be known but is certainly far larger than has ever been recognised; after the war most never talked about what they’d done to resist – either because nobody asked women, whose contribution was deemed uninteresting, or because those who had not resisted didn’t want to know the stories of those who had. Many female resisters were arrested and thousands ended their lives in concentration camps. As many as 10,000 French women were imprisoned in the camp for women, Ravensbrück. The stories of these returnees were ignored too.

                                          Susan Travers 

Englishwoman Susan Travers was a socialite living in France when the war broke out. She trained as a nurse for the French Red Cross and became an ambulance driver. When France fell to the Nazis, she escaped to London via Finland and joined the Free French Forces. In 1941, Travers was sent with the French Foreign Legion as a driver to Syria and then to North Africa.

In Libya, her unit was besieged by Rommel's Afrika Corps, but Travers refused to be evacuated with the other female personnel. After hiding for 15 days in sand pits, the unit decided to make a break at night. The enemy noticed the escaping convoy when a land mine went off. Driving the lead vehicle with Koenig, Travers took off at breakneck speed under machine gun fire and broke through the enemy lines, leading 2,500 troops to the safety of an Allied encampment hours later. Her car was full of bullet holes. Travers was promoted to General, and served in Italy, Germany, and France during the remainder of the war.

After the war, Travers applied to become a an official member of the French Foreign Legion. She did not specify her sex on the application, and it was accepted -rubber-stamped by an officer who knew and admired her. Travers was the only woman ever to serve with the Legion as an official member, and was posted to Vietnam during the First Indo-China War.
