I have a presentation tomorrow and I would rather watch a Rebecca centred episode of Emmerdale where she is the only character than do it.
nothing like reading with your face in the sun - I think virginia would have agreed (it’s so lovely to be back in her company, 4 years after getting right inside Mrs Dalloway at A-Level. the older I get, the more certain things jump out - her privilege in society is hard to divorce from her creative output, for example, and I’m not convinced by her personal branch of feminism, but nonetheless, it’s an absolute pleasure to get lost in her sentences)
so this is all very tumblr in 2014 but I got a new laptop and I spend all of my time on the train to and from the university atm so this is very much the vibe lol
(there was no good work-life balance at ox, which, honestly, was part of the fun I said what I said, but I am quite enjoying this routine where the day doesn’t start til I get on the train and it finishes when I get off it and there’s no frenzied 10pm ‘oh shit I haven’t read that, I’d better start now and see what happens’. when I move I think things will change a bit, and also the difference is definitely between an essay-heavy week ad a reading heavy week, but for the time being, this is good)
Throughout my life, I've developed a real fear of being 'told off' and punished- this has made me into a certified people pleaser. But since 2018 and the end of a very toxic relationship, I've been trying to unlearn people pleasing behaviours that harm myself and others. Yesterday I put in a library request with my university to access some content I really want to read as part of my research for an assignment. Unlicensed content or content the university doesn't own can be requested. I had a response from a junior librarian that I felt was very rude basically telling me I'd filled in the wrong form, but in a very scathing tone. Instead of trying to accept that I probably deserved to be 'told off' (I didn't) I replied that I felt her tone was unnecessarily rude and that the online forms were very unclear. She replied almost instantly apologizing and agreeing that they are unclear and she will flag this as an issue. I stood up for myself and set a boundary with her and she responded like a reasonable human being. No punishment. No lightning bolt from the sky aimed at my head. And now I feel stronger and more secure in what I deserve, just from that one small interaction. Sorry for how long this is 😆
