do people like.... not know they should make their really long posts collapsible anymore?? like i've seen so many live blogs in the critical role fandom in the past few days (and while liveblogging is cool and great) i saw this post already and it takes soooo long so scroll past.

guys. it's common courtesy. please make your posts have the "keep reading" thing to see the full post. if you don't know how to do it then look it up. it can't be that hard. rule of thumb: if your post is one full screen or longer, you need to do this.

Fictional characters are creations of imagination, and their actions are part of a story. While their adventures can be engaging, enraging, or troubling, they don't affect real life or have real-world consequences.

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to content, and it's okay to engage with what you enjoy.

Just as I respect your choices, I hope you can respect mine when it comes to the content I like, even if we have different tastes.

An easy way to avoid things you dislike is by not engaging. It's YOUR job to moderate your own online experience. If you can't do this, you aren't mature enough to be unsupervised on the internet.

My posts are usually tagged. If you feel like some are missing, so you can filter them out or in, you can politely ask me to add them. If they aren't bullshit (things that don't have anything to do with the post) I'll add them.

Question

So I wrote and posted an au fan fic in the fall and I've slowly been working on the next part. I finally figured out how to get past a writers block (burn it down!), so I decided to reread the first part to get the tone back in my head.

When I wrote it, I revised and edited it meticulously and now as I'm rereading it I'm like oh... this is missing words! Or needs a bit of clarification.

And then I'm like listening to the playlist that inspired it/was inspired by it and I'm like oh, if I would have slowed down, I could have put more feeling in this. I could have made it more impactful! I've been told before to slow down in my stories, but I have a natural tendency to be long winded where it doesn't matter. Like this post.

So my question is, does it matter if I go back and make these revisions now? Would it make sense to make them and wait on reposting it until I'm done with the follow up so that they kinda get viewed together? Does no one care and I'm being an egotistical shithead?

Use the READ MORE feature if you write long things.

My favourite limit is 300 words but really...just shorten those long text posts down...I beg of you...please....*sobs in a corner*

Something that I find unreasonably irritating is this recent generation of Tumblr users who do not understand the use of the insertable read more line. Like, I can't really blame them. Tumblr introduced that whack ass option to have all long posts automatically read more and made it the default, so they likely don't realize that just making your post longer does not hide the post. But it's still frustrating when someone writes a whole ass long form fanfic in a single post and doesn't use a read more line so I have to scroll past the entire thing, or when someone posts to talk about spoilers and writes at the top to beware of spoilers but then just leaves a gap with no read more line so that anyone who has the automatic read more turned off is exposed to the spoilers.

Yes, I realise I could solve this problem by switching my settings. But you realise that also cuts long posts that I actually want to scroll through as well right? Do you like the color of the sky would never have been a thing if the post was cut off so that people weren't able to see the punchline. Tumblr works and has survived because it is self managed content. That includes self managing your post length with the read more line. The more you allow for these things to be automatic, the more we shift towards the algorithm controlled cesspits that other social medias have become. Do yourself a favor and go into your settings to switch off the defaults and keep your dash under your control. Say no to recommended posts, force it to stay in order of date/time posted, don't let it cut you off from seeing the posts properly, and for the love of God learn how to insert read more lines. Instructions below the cut.

You're looking for this symbol. The two straight lines with a zigzag line in the middle. That will insert the read more line in your post. You get to control where in your post you put it. You don't have to add multiple lines trying to trigger a read more that won't be effective for all Tumblr users. You can just insert it at the top and have your entire post hidden if you want. Please please please use this.

Since I skated by some Tumblr drama in the last few days, and I’m seeing some jokes posted about similar things, I figured I’d throw my two cents in on this topic.

If you post personal information on a public forum, people will interact with it. If you don’t want every idiot in the world to see what you’re posting, find a way to make your post as private as possible. If you publicly post something, you are signaling to every single person who sees your post you are fine with them knowing this info about you and using it however they deem fit. Imagine running through a crowded mall, yelling whatever you’re posting about. You cannot, and I repeat, cannot get butthurt because someone in the crowd tells you to shut up or repeats what you said immediately unaltered or records you or repeats the story later. You are freely spreading your opinions and experiences with every person in the world at that point, and they are free to interact with that information however they want.

If you want to share it with specific people, that’s what private posting and private chats and things are for. You cannot rely on every person to understand that something is private even though it’s on a 200-foot billboard beside a busy highway. That’s not how publicly provided information works. If you want your information and experiences to be private, you have to keep them private, which means keeping them off the internet and especially out of public forums. And your blog on tumbler, if it isn’t completely locked down and super private, is a public forum. The entire internet is a public forum unless expressly stated otherwise. And if you feel personally attacked by the above statements, save it for your mother. This post is a PSA for all users. If you wouldn’t shout it at the top of your lungs in a busy place, don’t post it online
