We visited the Postojna Cave in Slovenia..

For a very long time, it was not known just how olms reproduce. Olms had been observed mating, but no births had been witnessed, and no olms younger than the age of two years had been seen. There was anecdotal evidence that olms gave birth to live young, but females were found to possess a gland that creates egg casings. It was even believed at one point that olms gave birth to live young when it was cold, and laid eggs when it was warmer.
This all changed last year, when a captive female olm in the aquarium at Slovenia’s Postojna Cave began to lay eggs. The female was quickly placed in a tank on her own to prevent the eggs being eaten by the other adult olms. Over the course of several days, the female laid over sixty eggs. She was removed from the tank, and the eggs were left in peace with a camera trained on them. Most of the eggs were lost to infection or decay, but twenty-three developed well. And in June of 2016, for the first time in history, humans witnessed baby olms hatching.
