Today was a fairly uneventful day, and it went pretty quickly.
I didn't get much composing done, but I got some practice in, and I finished Bluebeard.
I didn't like then ending, but I liked it at the same time. Without giving away what was in the potato barn, I'll say that they set up a specific picture, then change it last minute. The book did give me a lot to think about though, and I think it'll stay with me for awhile at least.
Ensembles went very well today. I had one of my "this is why I do music" moments today. In Symphony Band, we're playing "Alleluia" by Sam Hazo, and I think it's a very beautiful piece of music. I'm kind of lukewarm on the other pieces I've heard of his, but this piece is remarkable to me. It may not be original or phenomenally outstanding, but it's very beautiful. For a few seconds, there was a perfection in tuning, balance, and sound in the ensemble, and beauty was in the air of the rehearsal room, and in that moment, I didn't want to ever do anything else with my life.
Tonight I did some serious practicing, but my lips died quickly. I got some work in on lip slurs and scales, but not much on specific stuff in Morceau, and I don' t think there's much to do in the Mahler except intonation work.
I'm looking forward to my recital, but I'm a bit uneasy. I keep making stupid mistakes. I randomly forget that A's are flat in E flat minor... yeah. I just need to start focusing and make sure I'm ready for the playing I need to do.
