This article forms part of our Transfer Scenario feature, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at a recent transfer rumour and suggests what the potential consequences would be, should a deal be completed. Liverpool are reportedly interested in PSV’s Donyell Malen, according to The Sun. Malen, a 20-year-old striker plying his trade in his homeland following his departure from Arsenal in 2017, has been on top form so far this season, with 11 goals in 14 games across all competitions. That includes a current ratio of over a goal a game in the Eredivisie for PSV – with five goals coming in one game against Vitesse. Jurgen Klopp did not drastically add to his Champions League-winning squad over the summer, with backup goalkeeper Adrian arguably the only senior reinforcement. Though should Klopp eventually be tempted to delve into the transfer market once again, how would a move for Malen work out? Solid backup for first-choice trio Perhaps the attribute that leaves Malen most suited to Liverpool is his versatility across the front line of attack. While it would be difficult to expect Malen to immediately challenge the front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane for a starting place, he would arguably enter the Liverpool squad as prime backup for any of the front three roles – particularly with Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi the only current recognised alternatives, and Klopp may be obliged to select the £50m-rated Dutchman should he come with a hefty transfer fee. Finding a home on the wing With that potential theory in mind, and with two-thirds of the possible positions for Malen to slot into at any given time – be it for injury or rotational purposes – being situated on the wing, it would not be too far-fetched to suggest that the youngster may end up playing out wide rather than in the central role he currently occupies. Unless his form manages to sway Klopp otherwise, it is unlikely Malen will be able to pick and choose where his first-team opportunities could surface, so playing in a less preferred position more often should not be out of the question if he were to become a Red. Prolonged success at Anfield It could be argued that the main beneficiaries to Malen’s arrival will be the front three, should Malen become a trustworthy alternative that does not leave Klopp reliant on playing the same trio whenever possible. Firmino played the least out of the Liverpool attackers last season and he only failed to appear in five matches across the entire campaign. If of the required ability any future suitors would be hoping for, Malen could take the pressure off the attackers at Liverpool, leaving them fresher in the long run – and thus expanding Klopp’s options up top without compromising on quality.
