Probably not a very hot take, but one thing I've noticed about not only conservatives but anyone having a sort of worryingly 'right-wing' (for lack of a better term) mindset is the preoccupation with potentials instead of the world around them.
Disinformation, conspiracy theories, weird religious hangups, obsession with investment returns etc., spending more time in the realm of 'it could happen' than trying to earnestly engage with the world around them seems to me to be a hallmark of someone with a harmful and even destructive mindset.
Escapism is very human, but at the point where it becomes more important for you to view the entire world through the lens of what you think it is or the ideal of what it should be instead of looking at what it is and thinking about how it can be improved on its own terms, you're on a bad path.
thinking about curse of strahd npcs and how they would make great pre gen characters
Back to an earlier point about Buffy Season 7 having way too many Potential Slayers, tbh, last night I learned that there was a Colleen and Caridad who also became full-fledged Slayers and survived the battle of the Hellmouth.
And in reading the "Chosen" novelization, I remembered the Potential "Shannon," and in Googling her, I guess she survived, as well.
I feel like when people are talking about the Potentials who survived season 7 as full Slayers, we always talk about Kennedy, Vi, Rona, and Chao-Ahn (but I think even Chao-Ahn is sometimes forgotten about), but I've never seen anyone mention Caridad, Colleen, or Shannon.
There are also some unnamed ones who made it, too:
An unidentified girl was a Potential Slayer who fought beside the Scooby Gang, activated into a Slayer in 2003 during the battle at the Hell
How about an au where Merlin is somehow able to give Aithusa the ability to change into a human. He brings her to Camelot as his daughter and shenanigans ensue as everyone tries to find out how exactly she came to exist and as everyone in the Gang helps in parenting and fights to be her favourite. Bonus points for Mama Merlin with Lancelot as the only one who knows about his magic and Aithusa’s true self being a Dad.
(This is #9 on The List)
This is hella cute, though I hope you don’t mind that I’ve altered it slightly.
I’m thinking that Merlin tells people that Toddler!Aithusa is an orphan from Ealdor (coincidentally, his excuse for disappearing to spend time with Kilgharrah and Aithusa was that he was visiting his ma) that no one had the space or resources to look after. He obviously couldn’t bear to leave her behind to starve, and brings her to Camelot. He is SUCH a mama. I’m gonna say she still has access to some of her magic, like she can heal and spontaneously set fire to things, which Merlin has a tough time teaching her NOT to do. Lancelot (definitely the dad in this situation) thinks it’s hilarious. The other knights ADORE her, they spoil her so much it’s ridiculous, and all of them argue over who her favourite is all the time (it’s Leon, he reads her stories and always does the voices really well). Arthur is… befuddled, but he does love her, he’s just awkward because he has no concept of how to deal with children, and his way of showing his love is to teach her how to swordfight (Merlin throws a tantrum, Lancelot talks him down and convinces him it’s a good idea). Maybe she still doesn’t speak?? Walking around like a human doesn’t take all that much practice, but she couldn’t speak English even as a Dragon, she definitely can’t when she has a whole new mouth/set of vocal chords. Maybe her fist word is calling Merlin “Dad” like a year in and he sobs like a godamn baby, closely followed by “Unca Leo” and “Lanky” at which point… Leon and Lance ALSO sob.
Maybe someone gets threatened and little Aithusa goes Ape Shit and sets fire to a lot of things, everyone goes “😮” except Merlin, Lancelot, and Leon, (who figured out the kid was magic, recently, and hadn’t figured out how to tell her dad yet) who all get aggressively protective of her. Cue Merlin’s magic revealed and everyone going “Damn. Hold up… did you just say she’s a fucking DrAgOn?!”. There’ll be a happy ending, probably with Aithusa learning to shift between Dragon and Human at will, and honestly? Mostly it depends on where she’s tryna physically fit. If they’re out on the training field or running around in the forest, she’s a Dragon, if she’s following Merlin around the castle, she’s Human.
I’m also thinking Mercalot??

This is gonna be so cute I love it thank you so much!! :D
What happens to potentials who don't get called? What would have happened to Kendra? No family, no education, what was she supposed to do with her life if she wasn't called?
I have no answers, I'm just bothered by this. There are so many of them.
