Kingsley woke up in pain, or the phantoms of pain, and with Juniper’s name on his lips. Katie had been cradled against his chest with her face to his shirt to keep it from the smoke and the absence of her small body threw him. No, no he wasn’t supposed to give her to anyone but Juniper, they needed all the hands they could, Voldemort was here and this was no place for a baby.
He opened his eyes, hands still searching for Katie and her frantic hitching cries, to find himself staring at the walls of St. Mungo’s hospital. No. No, he couldn’t be in the hospital, he had to give Katie to Juniper, he had to--- Merlin’s beard he hurt everywhere.
“What’s happened?” He demanded, frantic, breath coming in shallow fits and starts. “I was only down for a moment, I swear, I was only-- this isn’t right, get me back there, I need-- where’s Katie? She was with me, I had her, I just had her, she was right here, I’m not to let anyone but Juniper take her, she’s precious where--- where---?”
