Hands are the bane of my drawing existence. So naturally I got an idea from one of my upcoming chapters with this image. But it was a good exercise for me and I’m posting before I obsess any more over it 😂🙌

Francis' love of hands is lovingly depicted here in what looks like graphite pencil or charcoal. All of these scenes are seminal to the film and viewers can place each one. The detail and control of the medium is well done as we can see in the fabric of Gheorghe's jumper and the shadows on each knuckle and palm.
What's also interesting is the artist's instinctual grasp of composition and how they crop the image at the most impactful place. There was a rule my painting teacher used to tell us, over and over, "Nothing in the middle that's middle-sized." Hirato effortlessly follows this guideline as most of these studies have the hands in the foreround and they take up most of the composition space. leading the viewer's eye on the most engaging journey.
