This I Believe

I believe in testing bracelets with big magnetic clasps reserved only for big tests.

I believe in carrying your books because adding a bag wil ruin your outfit and a dress from the 1940s does not need a backpack.

I believe at smiling into a tiny bright cellphone screen during class because you sweetheart called you baby.

I believe in pencils with .9mm lead because it makes your writing look bigger and more impressive.

I believe in being able to make decisions even if you're 17 years old.

I believe in novels that make your legs tingle and the hair on your arms stand up.

I believe in sleeping through lectures where the professor sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher and your eye linds feel like they're being weighed own by dumbbell eyelashes and your entire body feels like it's melting into the lecture hall's chair.

I believe in losing friends because people change.

I believe in staying with people forever because they still surprise you. Even after all this time.

I believe in taking off your bra for your boy because as far as he knows they're held together by black magic.

I believe in a hot cup of Jasmine tea that's steeped for just long enough, not too light and not too bitter.

I believe that anything you can do standing up is done better sitting down.

And I believe in the little girl who wants very much to grow up to be just like her grandma. To have a walking group, and a coop of chicken that scratch and cluck worriedly at the floor whenever no one's cooing over them, and a gaggle of wizened women who pluck at strings, dismayed at the pattern they've just crocheted, and I believe in the grandmother who knows every remedy.

I believe in love.
