From a Queenslander/ northern Australian's perspective: yeah... not /quite? Kazinsky DOES get pretty close, and props to him: he DOES sound a lot better than most 'Australian' accents. But it's still 50-50 throughout the movie as to whether he sound natural or not. There's a number of places the stressing is overworked or the vowel sounds just aren't quite right. ('mediocre pilots' for instance? Mmm.. not quite. The bomb run bit in Stacker's office: thumbs up.)
That’s sort of why I didn’t put the post in the tag… Because I’m pretty sure that I have the totally wrong ear to say if that actually does sound like an Australian accent. And I didn’t want people to think that I was arguing that Robert Kazinsky did a good job at sounding Australian when I would probably have trouble differentiating a British accent from an Australian one! Lol!
Even it comes to European French accents, I once made the mistake of thinking that a couple of people speaking Belgian French were French (a.k.a. from France). Oops! Thankfully we all had a good laugh about it.
I’ve occasionally heard some European French people try to tackle the French Canadian accent, and while some of those attempts are totally horrible, others (especially from European French individuals who have been spending some time in Quebec and/or have close friends/relatives living here) can be close… But not quite? Lol!i.e. Someone from France would hear them and think “Wow! You speak just like a French Canadian!”But a French Canadian would immediately notice something’s a little off…
Like our accent is so natural and effortless for us (we use and hear it all day) that you’ll notice someone making efforts and pronouncing things a bit differently that they are meant to be pronounced.
But if the accent is already something foreign for you (like the Australian or even some French accents for me), you’ll probably notice the similarities before the disparities first (at least, that’s my theory).
I’ve seen so many comments about Kazinsky’s accent being terrible (including from Kazinsky himself) that I was more surprised that the guy in the video reminded me of him, actually.
I’m 100% taking your assessment of it over mine any day, though!
