Evening with Planned Parenthood Ohana

Last month, we brought together more than 400 people to celebrate PPGNHI’s work in Hawaii. We continue to grow our Hawaii-based sex education programs to our advocacy work on progressive reproductive rights. Our patients are our top priority and we are planning to expand our health care services this year, including our online health services. In 2016, we saw more than 7,000 people in Hawaii and that number continues to increase.

The event brought together, local staff, volunteers and a few special guests, including OB/GYN Dr. Willie Parker, who is an abortion provider in the south and former professor at the University of Hawaii. As a champion of reproductive rights, he called on the audience to be vigilant in the years ahead. Next month, Dr. Parker’s book, Life's Work: A Moral Argument for Choice will be released. A must read!

In addition, our very own Dr. Reni Soon shared stories of the lives cared for and saved every day at Planned Parenthood and the need to protect these services for patients all across the country, and especially in places with unique geographies.

We continue to be humbled by the outpouring of support in Hawaii and are excited for the road ahead.

Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15 to October 15, Planned Parenthood is celebrating the Latino community across our region by honoring their histories, cultures and contributions. Latinos are a growing powerhouse and we must commit ourselves to supporting and empowering Latino patients, staff and volunteers and expanding efforts to improve sexual and reproductive health among Latinos.

As part of the awareness month, Planned Parenthood is launching its first-ever Spanish-language social media campaign, INVENCIBLES. With this campaign, we hope to reinforce that every person deserves to be respected, recognized, and celebrated. We are working to empower, uplift and support Latinas to become invencibles (unstoppable) by emphasizing stories of all their contributions to their families, their work and their communities.

Restrictions on reproductive health care, women’s rights and gender equity disproportionately impact communities of color, so we hope you’ll join us in engaging, mobilizing and empowering Latinas.

GiveBig and IdahoGives Ring In Another Amazing Year

In its eighth year, the 2018 GiveBIG day-of-giving event in Seattle raised $16.6 million for the region’s nonprofit organizations, including over $327,000 in individual donations for Planned Parenthood. More than 1,680 supporters donated to Planned Parenthood in 24 hours. THANK YOU!

Planned Parenthood also took first place for the second year in a row in Idaho’s day-of-giving event - IdahoGives! IdahoGives raised a grand total of $1,562,743 for 570 Idaho-based nonprofits, including $36,875 in individual donations to Planned Parenthood from generous Idahoans.

As if this wasn’t enough good news, we just had another significant fundraising win in Idaho! This week, Plannned Parenthood received a $30,000 grant from the Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation for expanded access to long-acting reversible contraceptives and related services in our Boise and Meridian Health Centers. The grant is effective for one year and will support greater health outcomes for women in Idaho.

We couldn’t be more grateful for all of this wonderful support – which translates directly into increased access to needed health care in our communities. Again, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in GiveBIG and IdahoGives this year!

Meet Willa Marth, VP of Equity and Global Programs

We are thrilled to introduce you to Willa Marth, our new Vice President of Equity and Global Programs. Willa has been with Planned Parenthood for 16 years as a steadfast leader in our education department. Recently, she took on a new role focused on advancing equity and inclusion across our four-state affiliate. She is a leader in this work and will be a valuable resource as she takes on these priorities for the organization. As Planned Parenthood continues to focus on access to care for our patients, we also recognize the world around us continues to change and evolve. People of all backgrounds continue to face threats here at home and abroad. Planned Parenthood health centers are proud to provide high-quality care to everyone, no matter what – no matter who they are, where they live, or where they are from. Our equity work will be imbedded in all facets of our work—health care, education, advocacy, and global programs.

We are resolute in our efforts to invest in racial equity initiatives across the organization from policies and practices, to workforce composition. We know, in order for all of us to have full control over our sexual and reproductive lives, we must work to end all forms of oppression and promote human rights. Together, we must name and address these barriers and take systemic oppression head on. This is a top priority for our organization, and we are fortunate to have Willa at the helm.

Our Clinical Services team cared for our patients every day. In large part, we keep our doors open because of our phenomenal health care staff. In 2016, they expanded care, lowered wait times, and reassured our patients and the communities we serve while under political attack.

One of the biggest successes in 2016 was the expansion of our online health services, regardless of geography, to all four states. The Planned Parenthood Care app provides affordable sexual and reproductive health care to thousands. You can have a video visit and get your birth control or STI testing and treatment kit in the mail. We will continue to look for new ways to innovate our health care services and lead in affordable, high-quality care.

Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of sex education in the country. At PPGNHI, our Education and Training Department provides interactive presentations on sexual health topics in a wide variety of classroom and community settings. Through our community educators to peer led sex ed, the education department’s approach to sex education is more than just talking about anatomy, birth control, and STD prevention.

One of the biggest successes in 2016 was the Teen Council Summit in Washington D.C., bringing together 250 people to share best practices and talk to legislators about the power of peer led sex ed. In addition, we started the new Treasure Valley Teen Council, bringing a Teen Council to Idaho’s largest metro area — a goal of our organization for many years.

We also launched the work made possible by our Office of Adolescent Health grants. Improving the Lives of Teens, IN.clued, Linking Families and Teens (LiFT), and Stronger Together are all underway with development and outreach taking place throughout the year. We are looking forward to furthering these programs in 2017.

PPVNH is a separately incorporated, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization educating residents and policymakers about reproductive health issues in Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho and Washington. The team worked incredibly hard all year with one of the biggest election cycles in our history where more than 6,000 volunteers took action.

We also bolstered a huge victory in Washington state by shutting down the discriminatory I-1515 initiative that did not collect enough signatures to make it on the November ballot. If that wasn’t enough, PPVNH also helped secure I-1433 on the Washington November ballot. Voters approved I-1433 and are in the process of raising the statewide minimum wage to $13.50 over the next four years. PPVNH volunteers assisted in collecting 8,000 signatures for the campaign.

In Hawaii, we lobbied for the passage of Senate Bill 2319, a groundbreaking bill that dramatically expands access to birth control in Hawaii. SB 2319 made Hawaii one of the first states in the country to require all public and private insurance providers to cover 12 months of birth control at a time, meaning that women will only have to pick up their prescription once a year.

6,304 volunteer shifts filled in support of women’s health, rights and justice.

13,000+ activists engaged to take action to support PP and reproductive rights and justice.

624 lobby visits with local, state and federal leaders conducted by volunteers.

PPGNHI recognizes that sexual and reproductive health services — including family planning and HIV/STI prevention and screening — play a critical lifesaving role in global health. Since 2001, Global Programs has leveraged our domestic expertise, working in partnership with non-governmental organizations to provide technical assistance and support in Cameroon, the Dominican Republic (DR), Ecuador, Laos, Nepal and Vietnam. These relationships positively impact the lives of women, youth and families. We are supported through the Suzanne Cluett Fund endowment, established in 2005 to foster and sustain global activities, as well as through additional support from foundations and individuals.
