The coolest part of my job this week!
(And an apology in advance for how uncool this actually is.)
A real life example of how and why PR firms collect data: Today we got the first round of feedback on the strike. Not just “support for labor unions is at an all time high” etc. (widely researched stuff.) But a customized analysis of social media interactions from our clients’ personal posts and media coverage about their involvement in the strike. Click rates, readership comparisons, survey results, comment summaries, everything a week in. We'll get new numbers next week.
I am definitely prohibited from sharing the details (womp womp data nerds) BUT, it has been cool to see a lot of fan posts pondering the same questions that our clients have! (How to show solidarity and avoid performative activism backlash, whether or not to picket, how and where to picket, which spokespeople to repost and spotlight, how often to post, is it okay to talk about anything else?) So if you are out there wondering "why is my fave not doing this right!?" maybe they are waiting for their publicist to show them the stats. 🐴
Are you a cynic with a rudimentary understanding of statistics? PR might the right career for you! (See how good we are at hyping ourselves up? Professionals, baby.)
