This module was all about developing my understanding of what graphic design is all about and how to do it through practice by generating ideas for a fantasy festival. I have never been to festivals myself before so I had to research into music festivals to look at what type of atmosphere it was there and what makes a great festival that will attract people’s attention. I then looked into the branding and touch points of these festivals to give me some insight of what I was up against, at the end of the module I wanted to be able to create a strong brand identity and a few final design outcomes that will help promote my fantasy festival.
At the start of the module it was all about brainstorming ideas for the name of the festival and it wasn’t as easy as it seemed. I already knew where and what type of music genre I wanted, I wanted my festival to be located on a beach and my music to be based around late 90’s to early 2000’s R&B, so I wanted the name of the festival to be relevant to that. I finally decided to go with the name Waves because it resembles the ocean waves which I see to be quite calming and chill which is what the R&B is like. The name waves also resemble sound waves so all in all I think I picked the perfect festival name for this module. To bring this logo to life I sketched out my logo multiple times and I went through a lot of trial and error to get the perfect logo, I was inspired by a lecture we had about Kate Morross to create my logo, I tried to bring the word Waves to life and give it character by adding actual waves behind it because my original logo was just a simple sans serif type logo but the new Kate Morross inspired logo looked more appealing. I then decided on what I wanted my brand identity colours to be and I chose three types of blue that also resembles the ocean and waves.
On my first feedback when I presented my idea I was told that I invested most of my time into the logo that I forgot to sketch out ideas for the other elements of the festival, I didn’t have a sketch to show the location of my festival and how I wanted it to look like so I was asked to create a sketch so that my lecturer can see on paper what I was thinking in my head instead of me just explaining to her. I then sketched up my idea of the location onto a piece of paper and digitalized it so that it could also be used as a map for the festival. I was pretty pleased with the outcome because now other people can understand what I was thinking and also because now that I sketched the location I could also use that as a map for the festival.
Once I got that and my logo out of the way I could start creating my touch points since the logo was the most important, I started off with creating my 10 second moving image, I wanted to create something that I could use to promote on social media such as Instagram and Twitter so I made my moving image 640x640px which was the dimensions for most videos I see on social media. I wanted my 10 second moving image to be quick and straight to the point so to start off I wanted to have a logo reveal using water particles which would last for 3 seconds and then after I wanted to get the names of the most popular performers to make an appearance on the rest of the video to persuade my audience and the whole moving image would loop itself.
I then went on to design a poster, I wanted all of my touch points to have the same type of design so I could create a nice set, so to do that I basically borrowed elements from each of the touch points to try and make all the designs matching. The poster needed to be simple but attractive so that people could look at it and get persuaded by the list of amazing performers that will be performing. I made a list of all the performers in random order and put it on the poster because that was what I wanted to be the main highlight of the poster and then I added in some extra detail like the logo and the date so that people will know when the festival will start.
I had to also create a brand identity guideline for my festival and at first I did not know what one was until I did a lot of research into big brands such as Skype, Dell and Microsoft and looked at their brand identity guidelines. I didn’t know companies had to create one of these but after looking at all of their guides I realised what it was all about and I created my own for my festival.
Overall I think that this module was successful because it was really a fun brief, I learnt a lot of things whilst doing this brief such as creating my own branding identity and generating ideas for a brand.
