Wanting Change
Interesting how the fandom thinks Crowley's asking questions and demanding change was and is admirable and worthy and brave and smart and insightful etc etc.
Even if ultimately, it did not work and ended up in Hell being created to which he was then cast out and bound to, and tasked with doing bad things.
That's all fine.
Everyone thinks he wouldn't have chosen otherwise given the chance again anyway, despite him lamenting his fall, because he knows how rotten Heaven is. And Hell is too. By definition. So what's the point in 'picking' a side. Toxic and all that. Well apart from the fact that there is nowhere else to go. You have to be one or the other.
At least he knows what he really wants. Right?
But when Aziraphale decides he has to try and make a change he is the bad guy. The stupid one, the credulous, the manipulated, the gullible. The one who doesn't see what is really happening.
He just doesn't understand that the system can't be changed.
Fine. Ok. So it can't be changed, it's exactly how God said it was. Exactly how Heaven and Hell claim their existence to be. Unchangeable and written down in a Plan. Nobody is allowed to step out of line. Nothing will ever change. Earth will get destroyed one way or another soon, and so will Universe and time and everything and only eternity for the victors will remain.
So what do you suggest in that case? Aziraphale and Crowley give up and hide in a cottage? For how long? A month? A year? Go to Alpha Centauri and hide for a few years?
Run even further and wait till Universe implodes and ceases to exist? Like Gabriel and Beez?
Something had to be done. Aziraphale got cornered and instead of giving up and running, he took the first step into the unknown. Because he learned that the Plan is indeed non-existent. And that he can change things.
And for everyone who thinks one try going badly means we should never try again and just - what, give up?
I suggest you look at some history. And may I steer you in the direction of Prague in 1968 and then in 1989.
