My prayer to start the New Year believing for BIGGER things!

I've been dating my boyfriend for almost 2 years and he's a wonderful, wonderful man. My mom has never liked him, and every time I talk to her about it she comes up with really random reasons and even when we deal with them head on she'll just come up with more and more things she doesn't like, even if they don't really make sense. My dad seems to really likes him We want to get married pretty soon, but my parents won't give us their blessing because of my mom. Can you pray for favour for us?

I know this is late, but know that I did pray for you when I read this. Your faith, hope, and trust in the LORD is everything. Remind yourself your boyfriend is not yours but God’s fully. If you can do that, I believe you could be looking at a miracle in the near future.

Heavenly Father, may You come first in our hearts, may You come first in our intentions because You are the Creator of love and life. We lift You up high and we lift You up greatly. We are grateful for all our relationships because they either make us strong or teach us lessons. Thank You for Your guiding hand that reproves us no matter how far we sometimes veer off. But we also thank You for Your will that is perfect and it brings us to glorify You. God, we lift up our friend and their significant other to You and we ask for Your will to be the most precious truth they’ll ever know. We ask that You provide chances for our friend’s significant other to be a blessing in their mother who is hard hearted about this relationship. LORD, make opportunities for this couple to love their parents who have sacrificed and given so much to bring them up and listen to their hearts’ deepest desires as they remember to put others first before themselves. God be at the center of this couple’s relationship so that they gain wisdom for themselves and favor in the eyes of their parents, and especially in Yours. We know that You willingly give Your best to those who seek to put You first and we know You bless continually those who do right. LORD, let Your love for these individuals grow in them a deep desire to show their families and friends what unconditional love looks like and let it extend beyond what respect they already have for each other. Make Your love to pour peace, hope, and patience on this couple and also on those who don’t practice Your Grace enough, that they may be more understanding and generous of their time. We believe that all things work out according to Your plan which always works perfectly on Your time. Pour Your blessings on this couple as they bless others along the way that they may receive Your favor and their parents’ favor for marriage. So we ask that more than anything, let us persevere to put You first. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray, Amen.

Book Review: Pray Big by Alistair Begg

You can never have too many books on prayer. With temptations all around us, I believe we all confess we can be praying more. But author Alistair Begg does not just want us to pray more. He wants us to pray big. And in this book, he shows us how.

Learn to Pray

Begg begins the book by teaching us that prayer is dependent and that prayer is spiritual (but not impractical). He challenges us to stop praying that God will “be with” us and that we should pray for the spiritual things that matter most.

He grounds his arguments in Ephesians and Nehemiah. Throughout the book are various quotes and hymn texts help for support. He writes in a straightforward style. The book is brisk and fast-paced.

Like an Apostle

The bulk of the book is dedicated to five points of prayer. Pray for focus, pray for hope, pray for riches, pray for power, and pray for love. He does not give you specific personal prayer requests. Begg writes in broad strokes and lets Scripture be the guide.

At just about 100 pages, Begg does not waste any space. His points are concise and his writing is clear. He ends the book by reminding the reader that prayer is powered by the Holy Spirit. And the epilogue exhorts us to pray for ourselves, to pray for those around us, and to pray for the glory of God.

Pray Big

As a Sunday School teacher, I am challenged to pray bigger prayers for my high school students. As a worship leader, I am encouraged to be bold in my prayers for the congregation. As a husband and father, I am exhorted to pray fervently for my family. But most importantly, I am moved to pray passionately in my private prayer life.
