The Song of Songs (1933)
Plot: Although she loves a young sculptor, a country girl marries an older man for his money.
Starring: Marlene Dietrich, Brian Aherne, Lionel Atwill
Director: Rouben Mamoulian
Trailer
Thanks to rainy weather today I was able to fit another movie in. Yay. So this is Marlene’s first movie in Hollywood not directed by Josef von Sternberg, who let’s be honest was seen as kinda like her Svengali, so that’s a big deal. I think she shined here playing a part that feels very much against type. I’ve never seen her so shy and innocent. It was odd at first but I grew to like it. I’m not her hugest fan but I mostly enjoy movies that I’ve seen her in so I have wanted to see this for a little bit. Story-wise it’s kinda meh-ish just because there’s not a whole lot going on but Pre-Code wise, it’s actually a little risque. First, the plot is first centered around Marlene meeting a sculptor named Richard played by Brian Aherne, who apparently only works with models that pose in the nude. Well, Marlene in this is a very religious girl who at first seems forced to go through with it but as she points out, a promise is promise so undressed she gets. With time, you can tell she gets more confident and finally, that line gets crossed. That whole sequence where that happens goes from adorable to kinda erotic and it leads to actually pretty obvious implied sex (girl is naked when they kiss lol) But of course, things after that take a turn. When Aherne’s character seems ready to run scared when commitment comes up, his baron friend decides to step in. Lionel Atwill did a wonderful job playing his character, but ewww he is awful. Such a snake. The whole sequence of their wedding night.... smh. I wasn’t surprised this movie had a bittersweet ending the more it went on. She gets her love back but can they ever really get back to where they were? Most likely not. The innocence is gone and she’s broken. But Richard remains hopeful and tells her it’ll be alright. That they can start anew. This wasn’t the greatest movie ever but I really appreciated that there was a little more to it then the ‘girl turns slutty, she must pay’ mentality that was sold back then. The acting and the visuals really made it better. Mamoulian was a great director & you can tell his camera was in love with Marlene. Glad I finally watch this.
“The girl who lands him will say no and put an anchor on it... But isn't it tough when all you can think of is yes?”

No Man of Her Own (1932)
Plot: A con man on the run from the police falls for a librarian.
Starring: Clark Gable, Carole Lombard & Dorothy Mackaill
Director: Wesley Ruggles
This is one of those movies I’m ashamed I haven’t already seen. Mostly because Clark & Carole had one of those Hollywood romances you love to read about & yet they were only paired in one movie together. And it was before they were even a couple. Now I know they didn’t fall in love with each other making this, in fact it was said they were indifferent towards one another on set. If anything, that makes their love story even more interesting imo, that it took years for romance to get into the picture. Anyway, about the movie itself, there’s really not much to it imo. It’s really the amazing chemistry between the two stars early on (even though Carole didn’t get equal billing as Clark since her star was still rising) that held my interest with this one. That’s about all I have to say on this one but still glad I watched it, if only to see these two together in action.
Listen to this and try to guess what's going on...

Theresa Harris in Baby Face (1933)
Screenshot from a Ginger movie I watched the other night, The Thirteenth Guest.
Outwardly, I kicked my feet and put my hands over my mouth. Inwardly, I was shouting 'WATCH OUT! Ginger, look behind you!!! RUN! Keep your hands off of her, you monster!!'
Since youtube blocked it, I guess this video just became a tumblr exclusive.
So again, pre-codes and Florence. y/y?
