Is it possible for your labor to be so fast that the baby doesn't have a chance to adjust to being born? If your labor was fast the first time will it be faster and faster with each child? Let's talk about really fast labor!

Really fast labor is called “Precipitous Birth”.  Precipitous labor is considered any labor that is 3 hours or less from first contraction to baby’s birth.  No one can predict who will have a precipitous birth and who will end up in labor for days and days (and neither is necessarily better than the other).

For full term fetuses, contractions are like a big, strong, comfy hug that momentarily cuts off their oxygen flow.  It’s not a problem, since it only lasts for 1 minute and the uterus always relaxes for 2, 3, or more minutes before the next one.  However, when people have super fast labors, those contractions start coming every minute or two minutes, which means the fetus isn’t getting a break in between to breathe.  It can stress the baby out causing the baby to poop inside the uterus (pass meconium) or have changes in their heart rate (decelerations of the heart rate).  

There’s not much to do about this, but to carefully monitor the heart rate and try to improve oxygen flow to the fetus by changing the parent’s position, giving them lots of fluids, and giving them oxygen.  Occasionally providers will even give a medication to slow down contractions if it’s bad enough.

Since the birth is so fast, though, many people don’t make it into the hospital in time for the providers to notice what’s going on with the baby, and for the most part everything is fine.  Either they give birth at home or in an ambulance (or taxi), or they make it into the hospital just in time to give birth so all that anyone is focused on is the baby coming out.  Sometimes babies are surprised by how fast they move down the birth canal and are born somewhat “stunned”, a little limp and blue, but some stimulation and extra oxygen perks them right up.

Most people have faster & faster labors each time, so if a first labor is precipitous, I recommend going to the hospital as soon as you feel the first contraction!!
