im still not done reading this but there’s a 3 part reddit article w a historical overview and links to (sometimes semi-private) predebut videos, and it also links to an overview of predebut namjoon seperately. i knew some of the people in the original lineups and how the group was formed, but there’s so many more details and footage that’s quite rarely spread nowadays or harder to access, it’s rly interesting.

Best of Pre-debut RM

While everyone’s looking forward to the comeback, I decided to look back, way back to pre-debut, at Joon’s early lyrics (at least all the ones I could find translations for). 

Isn’t he a cutie? He has quite some hidden lyrical gems too. So without further ado, here are some fun lyrics that stood out to me.

You might’ve thought Intro: Persona was the first time RM asked himself, “Who the Hell am I?” in his lyrics, but it was actually back in 2008 in a collaboration with Zico, then Nakseo, in a song called Fuck Cockroaches. But my favourite line from that song has to be, “my life is just scribbles with a part of it erased.”

In 2010 diss track Hook, the highlight for me is RM’s English line, “Maybe DISS is what you want, our Special Occasion.”

Lee Hyun’s 2011 song Bad Girl ft. Glam and RM has another fun line: “I know I’m just one of many fish in your big fishery,” taking the ‘many fish in the sea’ metaphor to another level.

Glory, another of his songs from 2011, really doesn’t hold anything back: “You say I’m a dick? Yeah, that’s right, as you mess with me, I get bigger.” Hoo boy, he doesn’t write them quite like that anymore. The whole song is a treasure trove with lyrics like, “And the rest of them ignored me, they tore my hymen,” and “The only issue is, I’ve never shown you me, the real realm in me, you’ll never know what it is.”

In a collaboration with David Oh in 2012 for Thinkin Bout U, he comes up with a, uh, very unique simile for his love interest: “just looking at you is refreshing, you’re like a kiwi.” Maybe there’s something lost in translation with this one.

Here’s one from a song that’s a bit better known in the fandom, A Typical Trainee’s Christmas. In the spirit of the song, if not the season, he raps, “This isn’t snow, it’s poop, poop, poop! Look at the sky it’s raining it’s raining white poop.”

In 2013′s Freestyle, he freestyles about graduating and moving on from school but being uncertain about his path: “entrance exams are finished, but the world is full of problems.”

Finally, I’ll leave you with a line from his Freestyle 3, where he talks about his journey joining Bighit and eventually meeting the members who would make up BTS: “I came with my untainted heart like a blank page when I was seventeen.”
