There is one thing I really try to figure out with this sometimes hateful fandome. Just hypothetically speaking and as an absolute Jikook believer. What do you think would generate more hate and incitement? If Jikook officially came out, or if one of them officially had a girlfriend? I may be naive, but I actually think a girlfriend would draw more envy and hate. But maybe I’m underestimating just how many sick homophobes there are.
I'm going to take your question as if it's coming from someone who's asking very innocently, respectfully, and maybe just a little naively. I'm also going to assume you're from the West, because the implications are quite different depending on where you're coming from.
If Jimin or Jungkook turned up tomorrow and confirmed they were dating a woman, I think the hate and the drama would mostly come from within the fandom. You'd have the fans who genuinely believe they have a chance with one of the members, the ones who think they're basically their girlfriends, or who are convinced the members are secretly in love with them. You know, the whole Y/N or self insert crowd who imagine themselves as the idol's partner.
In Jimin and Jungkook's case, there might be some buzz in the Korean press depending on who the woman was, but beyond that, I don't think it would become some huge national scandal. Of course, you'd get fans saying they're going to stop supporting them, and I can easily imagine a few fansites or akgaes sending protest trucks to the company or doing something equally dramatic. That's the sort of childish behaviour some fans, particularly Korean idol fans, are known for. But that's about it.
Now, the implications of Jimin and Jungkook confirming a same sex relationship, whether with each other or with other people, would be on a completely different scale. We're not just talking about social consequences. There would be personal, professional and financial consequences as well, especially in their own country.
People need to understand that South Korea is still an extremely homophobic society. It doesn't matter if you're as famous as the members of BTS. In fact, when you're at the very top, the fall can be much steeper and much more painful.
People made an enormous scandal out of everything that happened with Jongguk, even though, realistically, nothing actually happened. So can you imagine something like this?
Jimin and Jungkook would be socially finished in Korea. And no, I don't think that's an exaggeration. They would almost certainly be blacklisted, or at the very least there would be serious attempts to blacklist them from the Korean entertainment industry. They would be relentlessly harassed, insulted everywhere they went, and endlessly criticised. Their own fans, especially the akgaes and solos, would absolutely tear them apart. Again, I don't think that's an exaggeration.
Internationally, especially in the West, the reaction would probably be very different. They would receive a great deal of support. But people often forget that they live in Korea. They work in Korea. Their assets are in Korea. A huge part of their income comes from Korea. Their company is Korean. So being essentially destroyed in Korea wouldn't necessarily mean the absolute end of their careers, but it would make continuing those careers incredibly difficult.
Could they move abroad permanently? Absolutely. And maybe, after enough time had passed, the backlash would die down to some extent. Things might eventually settle. But in Korea, they would become social pariahs.
That's why, unless attitudes in South Korea change significantly, I simply cannot see them ever publicly confirming a relationship with each other, or with anyone else of the same sex.
