Belos turned his masked face to little Mercy and little Percy's direction, as they tugged on his cloak. Smiling under the mask, he picked up the two toddlers and settled them on each of his knees.
"What is it, little ones? Did you run away from Adrian again?"
"No!" said Mercy, always the most outspoken of the twins. "We wanted to see you work!"
"I wanna see a wild witch!" Percy threw his arms put with a large grin.
Belos chuckled, scooping a child in each arm before standing.
"A wild witch? Is that all?"
"I think I have some time to show you one."
Both children giggled and cheered as they and their father disappeared from the throne room, reappearing in an outdoor area where several statues stood.
"Here are several wild witches that opposed your father as he tried to make the Boiling Isles safe for little ones like you," he carefully set them down and walked forward, each child following at his heels. Mercy seemed intrigued while Percy looked initimidated and stayed closer to his father, threatening to hide in his robe.
Mercy ran up and down the lines of statues, looking at each one.
"That's what you get for messing with the Emperor!" she pointed up to a random witch. Another chuckle caught her attention and a large hand petted her head.
"Papa, I want to see a real live wild witch now! Right, Percy?!"
"N-No, I'm good. I saw enough..."
Belos glanced down to see his son gone but felt him under his robes.
"I think that is a bit too dangerous at the moment, my love. Besides, your mother may be wondering where you are."
Mercy pouted, her eyes going as big as saucers with crocodile tears, tugging at his heartstrings.
"Oh, now, don't do that. How about when my coven scouts bring back some wild witches to put them in covens, I'll let you watch? I just got reports that there will be some arriving tomorrow from the Conformatorium."
The girl suddenly brightened and nodded.
"Okay! Can I turn them to stone?!"
Belos let out a laugh before scooping his daughter up.
"Oh, Bambi, you know petrification hasn't been used in a very long time. I'm afraid that's one thing we can not do just for being covenless," he sighed. Mercy pouted again, but when she was close enough, she took his mask off of his face and put it on hers. He felt his robes move and, glancing down, he found his own eyes peering up at him.
"Really? What else do they have to do to be petrified?"
"Well..." Belos rolled his eyes up. "Let's just say they have to be really bad to have to have that done."
"Oh, yes. That would definitely lead to this," he nodded. "And attack you."
"I don't wanna be attacked!" Percy gasped and hid back under his father's robe. Belos leaned down and scooped him up in his free arm before nuzzling him.
"I will never allow anyone to do that. I will protect you with my life, Percival," he murmured, then chuckled when Percy nuzzled back with a smile.
"Now, let's get back before we give your mother a heart attack."
This caused both children to break out in giggles as they and their father disappeared from the morbid statue garden.
