Adventures in the Elements
Welcome back! It has been a minute (myyyyyy bad!!). Anyway, onto the twelfth episode of The Owl House titled Adventures in the Elements!
Just in case anyone was still unaware of Luz's bisexuality, she states in this episode that she has a crush on "education" who she refers to as a "she" as she looks at the Hexside pamphlet. Eda returns from the human realm with human trash to sell at the market. As Luz is discussing her excitement about starting school, she adds Amity to the list of people she is excited to see when she gets there. This is when she remembers that she is supposed to go meet up with Amity and runs into town.
We finally get to see Amity in normal clothes! When Amity returns Luz's book to her, she tries to play cool about the book, but Luz finds the fanart that Amity drew (which Amity then burns up lol)
However, Amity doesn't believe that her and Luz will be in the same class because Luz needs to be able to cast two spells. Of course, Luz panics and feels embarrassed so she says that she definitely knows two spells. Basically at this point, Luz only knows how to do the light glyph which she learned EIGHT episodes ago?! Love Eda down but she hasn't up to this point taught Luz how to use magic (and spoiler alert, Luz figures out the rest of the glyphs at a later point but we will discuss that later!). At the Owl House, Eda is using a potion to bring inanimate objects alive to help with cooking, but the vegetables just run away from her. Luz asks for Eda's help and she decides to take Luz on a field trip.
Eda takes Luz to the Knee to learn some new magic. You know I can't resist an outfit change so we get to see their winter garb on the knee.
While Eda is showing Luz the Knee, they pass a creature called the Slitherbeast that lives in this part of the Boiling Isles.
Eda says that she chose this spot because they would be alone. However, a shot of magic goes past them and they see the Blight family helping Amity with her spells. This includes my favorite line where Luz says "Oh cramity Amity is here" - iconic. Also more winter outfits!
While Amity is using a training wand to learn new spells, Eda is saying that she will teach Luz the difference in tastes of snow. Eda later on has Luz exploring the knee and trying to get her to understand and take in the beauty of the Isles. However, very unconventional teaching with Luz's impatience to learn.
Meanwhile at the Owl House, King is commanding his stuffed animal army. He decides to use the potion that Eda used to animate his toys to life so that he can give them real commands. Hooty attempts to join in, but King does not want him to be part of the activity (poor Hooty). However, the bear that just came from the Human World does not appreciate the clear favoritism given to Francois and is slowly turning to vengeance.
Luz, feeling frustrated by her lack of progress in learning her second spell, takes Amity's practice wand to help with learning. When Luz uses Amity's wand, her magic circle is orange versus Amity's which is a purplish-pink. Luz goes overboard with the wand and causes a huge explosion that seems to anger something in the distance. Also, while using the wand, the battery is getting lower and lower. When Eda finds her using the wand, she is upset that Luz is using her techniques to learn magic. The Slitherbeast shows up with a scorch mark in it's fur and takes Eda. Eda attempts to use some magic and her spell circle is yellowish-orange.
The twins and Amity show up to help with the situation. The twins use their magic (Emira's circle is light blue and Edric's is like a greenish-blue). They get taken by the Slitherbeast too and when Amity tries to help using the training wand, it has no more battery in it to cast a spell. The Slitherbeast runs off to a cave with Eda, Edric, and Emira.
Meanwhile, back at the Owl House, the bear is PISSED and POSSESSED due to mistreatment by King. The rest of the toys rise up against King and Francois and kick them out of the house. While outside, King convinces Hooty to help destroy the evil toys (which Hooty does gleefully of course).
Amity locks Luz up to prevent her from causing more harm as she goes to rescue Eda, Edric, and Emira. Luz is feeling bad about the events of the day and that she has only learned one spell. She writes out the light glyph and tracks as it goes into the stars. She notices that the stars then make the shape of the glyph when it is returned to the sky.
Luz is realizing that the light glyph is part of any light. She holds out her hand to the falling snowflakes and sees a new glyph when the snowflake melts. Luz has learned a new glyph! The Ice Glyph!
She realizes that, although unconventional, Eda has taught her that magic is everywhere in the Isles. She rockets herself out of her prison and makes her way to the cave of the Slitherbeast.
Luz finds the trapped people and says that she has a plan that will save them. Eda doubts that but Luz is on a mission to find Amity.
When she finds Amity, she tells her the plan to save everyone from the beast. Luz distracts the beast and gets it to chase her out of the cave. Amity goes over to Eda, Edric, and Emira and attempts to use the fire spell to free them which she does successfully without the use of the training wand. Luz is still being chased by the Slitherbeast, but gets it to land on her ice glyph in the snow. She YEETS the Slitherbeast into the sky.
After telling everyone how she learned her second spell, Amity says that they will definitely be in the same class at Hexside. Luz asks Amity if she will join her Azura book club, but Amity wants to keep it a secret. This may be the first time that Amity blushes at Luz (crush status).
We also get Hooty's iconic "I will be haunted by my actions forever" line after what he did to the stuffed animals (unfortunately could not find a picture of this:/)

The first thing that I want to talk about is that I have never noticed the different colors in the spell circles that each different character casts! Amity's is purple/pink to allude to her favoring Abomination magic. Eda's is yellow which could show her strength in potion magic. Willow's is green which is for her plant magic. Emira's and Gus' are both blue that reflect on the illusion magic that they both use. Emira's might be a little bit darker which goes with how she joins the healing track as well. Edric's is a kind of greenish-blue tint which connects with him doing illusion and potion magic, but he also is interested in beast keeping magic which is why it might be this darker green color. I will have to look more closely at other characters and their spell circles to see if it tells the story of what magic they are strongest in.
Regarding Luz learning magic, Eda is important in getting Luz to honor the land that she lives on to learn from it. However, it really is the Titan who is teaching Luz the different glyphs within magic! Which allows Luz to create the glyph magic system that she uses throughout the show to create magic spells like invisibility, hover, and control the effect of the magic spell.
