God I’m just thinking. And ugh, the Jedi’s martial arts must have been amazing. They had seven distinct styles, passed down over a thousand generations, by uncountable lineages.

Every lineage must have had their own katas, their own training methods and distinct variations on the forms. There were probably inter-lineage feuds on what type of sparring they taught, variations on specific katas, which techniques were acceptable in sparring, anything. You KNOW those High Republic Outpost Jedi must have created new styles that were gradually subsumed into the 7 forms.

What would a Jedi Tournament have looked like? Were there ones for specific forms, like Soresu-only competitions? Did they have some kind of point sparring? Was there an endurance/blocking division? How would they have measured Force abilities in a tournament setting? How did they score?

Resists the urge to turn the "Luke's Legends NJO travel back in time to the Clone Wars and pretend to be Sith while fixing stuff" premise into a way too serious (and hopefully non-judgmental) juxtaposition of the two Jedi Orders' different approaches to politics and how they define their duty to the galaxy differently under similar circumstances.

Traditionally, Jedi are peacekeepers and monks, paladins of the Republic. But during the fall of the Republic - particularly the Clone Wars - they are forced to evolve into straight-up superheros. Like traditionally, Jedi meditate in total stillness and silence, CW Jedi meditate while doing triple backflips over tanks and counting the number of battle droids they've taken out.

The elders remember what once was, and most long to return to that state, but they as the wisest and most skilled are resultingly among the greatest of these action heroes. And even then, most of these epic heroes fall to the war, but the children who survive know nothing except how to be Superheroes.

“Jedi cannot help what they are. Their compassion leaves a trail." doesn't quite cover it for these War Padawans. It's not just that they can't resist helping people, it's that they also literally have no concept of helping in any way less than liberating an entire city. Anything less is simply missed opportunities. And yes, jumping out of a ship in upper orbit (to show off/because adrenaline) and blowing up the badguy base were totally 110% necessary to help!!

And then the next generation - both force sensitive and not - are completely unaware that this isn't normal Jedi modus operandi and conclude that it must be...

I think people in the Star Wars fandom need to learn the difference between Things the Jedi do Because of the Nature of the Force and Things the Jedi do for Other Worldbuilding Reasons.

Let me explain: the Jedi do not use the Dark Side because the Dark Side, as per Lucas’s worldbuilding, is inherently corrupting and wrong. That’s part of the core worldbuilding of Star Wars, so a group that’s supposed to be the Good Guys cannot use the Dark Side. No, not even a little bit, that’s not how the Force works.

The Jedi forbid romantic relationships not because romantic relationships will bring you to the Dark Side, but because the Jedi Order, as it exists in the Prequels, is an institution that requires absolute commitment. As a Jedi, you have to be 100% committed to the Order, willing to die and sacrifice anything for it, because the Order serves the Republic as peacekeepers and negotiators, and if you half-ass that commitment, people are going to die. Serious romantic/sexual relationships like marriage also require a ton of commitment, and without it, they fall apart. You can’t be 100% committed to both, and trying will destroy the relationship and probably get people killed. That’s why the Prequel-era Jedi forbid romantic relationships, not because they think you can’t serve the Light Side while in a romantic relationship.

In conclusion: no, the Jedi are not ‘wrong’ about romantic relationships because ‘they think romance drives you to the Dark Side’. The Jedi don’t forbid romance for Force reasons, but for practical (and possibly also monk) reasons.

I'm a little surprised that post-NJO Legends isn't more popular just because the way Luke's Jedi assocate with the Galactic Alliance in those arcs is exactly how so many people seem to think the prequel Jedi should have associated with the Republic.

Started reading Light of the Jedi, and it’s been really good so far—the pacing is good despite the POV shifts, the characters are distinct, and the worldbuilding is very good, especially for an established setting. It feels like someone could read this as a stand-alone sci fi novel with no background with Star Wars and get along just fine.

But one of the things I like the most so far is this kind of general ‘people are inherently good’ philosophy that the whole book kinda has.

Idk how to explain it exactly, but all of the characters feel very realistic and human, and they all try to help others. The captain in the first chapter likes and cares for her passengers, and even knowing she’s going to die, she does everything to save them. The scan techs are scared and have lives and people they want to see again, but they put out the warning first, even though they might’ve survived if they hadn’t. The elected official guy stays behind with to coordinate the evacuation and tries to get everyone else out first. And, duh, the Jedi are Jedi.

It’s just really refreshing for a Star Wars project to have that faith, since most of Star Wars is set in some of the worst times possible: civil war and descent into fascism, life under fascism, rebellion against fascism, civil war, post-war and post-fascism reconstruction, the resurgence of fascism. Those are times where it’s hard to trust anyone, let alone have a hopeful outlook on humanity. For most of Star Wars, the elected officials are corrupt and power-hungry, the normal people feel like it’s everyone out for themselves, and the Jedi aren’t allowed to just be Jedi.

It’s also pretty good worldbuilding; like Yoda said in Clone Wars, the prequel Jedi couldn’t take the right path, they had to take the only available path. But in this time, the Republic is working, people are helping each other, the Jedi are allowed to be Jedi. The Jedi have the ability to take the right path, to stay behind on Hetzal and stop the explosion—in the prequels, Palpatine and the Senate wouldn’t have let them stay behind, and even if they did, they might not have been able to move the Tibanna, because the Dark Side would’ve been clouding everything and making it harder to use the Force.

That the Jedi are able to help and that other people are willing to help really helps emphasize that this is a completely different time period and landscape than most of Star Wars. It really sells the idea that this was the galaxy’s golden age.

Idk I’m rambling, but I really like Light of the Jedi so far, and if it stays good I might get into the rest of the High Republic

I just read a fairly detailed article exploring the idea that the Jedi were "stagnant," and giving a variety of examples from throughout their history up until the Clone Wars of them changing to adapt to new circumstances.

And it got me thinking about Ahsoka's opinions on that, both before and after her trial.

The way I imagine it, it's not something she's fully thought through, because part of her complaints is that the Jedi have become so used to being peacekeepers in the Ruusan era that most of them don't adapt well to what they need to do in this war. Sure, the Jedi aren't supposed to be soldiers, but as far as Ahsoka is concerned, that's mostly irrelevant because they now need to be soldiers in order to save lives and help people. Especially the clones that almost nobody else even acknowledges as sentient, let alone worth saving.

Were she to be asked how the Order would have done better to adapt to the times, Ahsoka probably wouldn't have an answer. In part because she is so young, I don't think she fully appreciates the fact that the role they had until then was one that totally worked in its time.

Part of it is also disillusionment with the so-called Republic. Obviously she can't know the full extent of Palpatine's nature and plans, but as the war gets worse, she's smart enough to figure out that the only peace they're fighting for is peace at blasterpoint.

Again, she hasn't put in a great deal of effort to think these things through, because I think even before her trial she holds some resentment for what she sees as the Jedi letting this happen, even though the Jedi actually couldn't have reasonably done anything about it. She understands that the Jedi are subordinate to the Republic, but she folds that in as a thing they're not willing to change in order to fix this.

Especially after her trial, when she's living with the common citizens of the galaxy and seeing why they blame the Jedi for the war.

Then there's the Siege of Mandalore. When she's approached (by Bo-Katan in Disney canon or Spar in my more Legends-centric headcanon) to help them fight Maul, she knows the situation there, and that the Republic and by extension the Jedi are probably going to ignore it because Maul's at least smart enough not to do anything with Mandalore that would make it strategically relevant on the galactic stage.

Her time spent among the Mandalorians, then, lets her figure out what she wants to be doing now that she isn't a Jedi: Solving problems like that, helping people in contexts where the galactic government can't or won't.
