A year and three days ago, I participated in my first prescribed burn at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. (Little did I know it would remain my ONLY prescribed burn until Feb 25 2021.) It was a long, beautiful, challenging, exciting, humbling, exhausting, and seriously fun day, and I learned so much from all the wonderful DCR folks who worked it. I also got to see all of the theory I'd been reading about put into practice (especially how to respond to a spot fire!). I hope to burn many, many more times, but this one is and will be special to me always--and I'm forever grateful to the Americorps VSCC program for giving me the opportunity! Almost exactly a year ago, I was completing fire training with a Fire Field Day at Hungry Mother State Park. This included a bunch of practical, hands-on training with pumps, hand tools, fire shelters, and lots of other stuff, including the Pack Test (walk 2 miles in 30 minutes carrying 25 pounds). I really enjoyed doing it alongside my fellow Americorps members--the camaraderie was the best thing about that training, and it felt awesome to be cheered on (and to cheer others on).
