So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. I am a self-taught fashion designer based out of Northridge, CA. As long as I can remember, I’ve always been into fashion and drawing but never thought I’d be designing clothes and selling them to hundreds of people. I attended Cal State University Northridge for a few years, after realizing that I wanted to pursue my dreams and follow my life long passion. I dropped out of college in 2013 with only two semesters left to complete my degree in Sociology. My friends and family didn’t understand my decision, but I walked by faith and believed 100% in my vision. In 2011, I started my first clothing line named Prestigace in my living room with a former business partner, we released our first shirt collection in 2013. Prestigace is inspired by classic style, street, and high fashion. Prestigace is a brand created for the well-rounded man who appreciates his individuality, exudes Prestige and bridges the gap between street and gentlemen style.
After parting ways with my former business partner in 2014, I rebranded Prestigace with a new logo and purpose. I went from screen printing shirts to fully designing cut and sew garments. I wanted give my perspective on high fashion streetwear although at the time I had little to no experience in that arena. Since then, I have released cut in sew collections that have retailed for over $100. Over the years, I’ve been a one man wrecking crew for my business up until recently. I’ve taught myself the designing process in photoshop and illustrator, I’ve also taken sewing classes so I can understand the process behind putting together a garment. I learned photography so I can shoot photos from my brand’s lifestyle images, website, and social media platforms. My friends call me the jack of all trades because I do almost everything that other brands pay people to do.
In 2018, I Co-Founded my second brand BLV Apparel Co with Jay Field. Initially, I was hired to create the logo and design for BLV Apparel, shortly thereafter I was asked to come on as Co-Owner/Creative Director of the brand. BLV Apparel Co. is an athletic leisure brand that Is committed to creating effective performance wear with innovation & integrity. High-quality performance wear that will make you feel confident, stylish, and inspired to BLV-EVE in your inner Greatness. I am proud owner of two brands aspiring to impact the Fashion & Fitness Apparel world. The goal is for my brands to be the foundational start to my future fashion empire.
Has it been a smooth road? The road definitely hasn’t been smooth, however I’m appreciative of the process. I’ve taken many losses, but I’ve also had a lot of wins building my brands. When I first started out I was like a dear in headlights trying see to exact where I could fit into the fashion industry. In hindsight, I realize that for a long time I wasn’t designing from my own perspective, I was busy focusing on what other “BIGGER” brands were doing. Instead of focusing on designing what was true and authentic to me, I lost the vision that I once had for my OWN brand. When I regained focus I began designing from my own perspective, using life experiences to tell a story through my garments. During that time I was reminded of my purpose and I birthed the concept that “Every Individual is Prestigace in Their Own Right” It allows me to never forget where I’ve come from, while understanding I can/will always rise up from it.
See the purpose is to know your demographic/consumer and create clothing that they can connect with. I’d say one of the biggest struggles was doing everything by myself as it sucked the creativity out of me, and had me stuck for a while. With prayers and trust, I’ve started to build a team to relinquish some of those responsibilities so I could focus on having fun creating again.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Prestigace & BLV Apparel Co. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others. Prestigace is a high-end streetwear brand where you will see versatile designs. We specialize in cut and sew garments with great attention to detail. From complex designs to intricate seam stitching. Almost all of Prestigace garments have its signature chevron stitching that the consumers love. BLV Apparel Co is my latest brand, it’s an athletic leisurewear. I’ve always been into fitness and health, I’ve also enjoyed looking nice while working out. So creating pieces that are performance capable, comfortable, and fashionable is important to me. For BLV Apparel Co & Prestigace we only use high-quality fabrics that are sourced right here in Los Angeles.
I’m most proud that after six years, I’m still going strong and building Prestigace because many brands come and go. However I’m still standing, and Im motivated more than ever to create dope collections for the world to see. Knowing that I haven’t even taped into my fullest potential, gives me the drive of one who just started. As to what sets me apart from others is that I’m a self-taught designer with a distinct eye for creativity that is put into every garment.
I released my Prestigace “LA” Capsule collection inspired by the late great Nipsey Hussle. I’ve always been inspired by the Los Angeles legend, so I wanted to honor him in my latest release. So I drew inspiration from the Victory Lap Logo and flipped it so say LA, which is a concept that I kept seeing in my head. The caps have sold out twice, and I just release my 3rd restock of the “LA’ Caps.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least? I love the creativity and boldness, everyday I’m inspired to go out and be great. One thing I can’t stand is the traffic, it is always a struggle getting to DTLA from Northridge.
