The sound of grainy strings playing from the low bit speaker system below the table scratches at my eardrums. Gene Kelly deserves better. Fuck this camp. My sore eyes tell me it’s 5pm but I know it’s barely midday, we haven’t even broken for canteen lunch. If you can even call browny-green translucent lettuce leaves draped across some stale store bread a meal. Malnourished mien. Anorexic wallet. All I need is a moth-eaten trenchcoat and I’d be a fucking time travelling artist. Probably get laid non-stop. Fucking indeed. But this strange town is only good for bistro lunches and bingo nights, a silver lining for a desperate gold-digger. And what is this smoke effect for anyway? The battle scene is at least four hours away from starting. And that’s my death cue. A sad death, impaled on my own carving knife, trying to defend the last rations of the camp. “Take my hand, take my whole life too”. Elvis, you deserve better than this portable radio.
