forward, under the black flag; exploits of the most notorious pirates
That a respectable person should take an interest in the doings of robbers and villains may seem reprehensible to those who mistake prudishness for morals. To such I make no excuse, but proceed regardless of their opinions to the narration of this history, heedless of consequences, but well knowing that many gentlemen accounted worthy profited by these transactions

Misconceptions or general facts that people should know about pirates? I feel like know one really knows what real life pirates were like and did because so much of it is mixed in with legends and fiction.
I’m afraid that’s actually the case. The little we know about individual pirates consists of a few original documents (although for some it is questionable whether they date from that time or were created later) or fictitious works created shortly after that time. It is also questionable how far the book A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates really corresponds to the truth. In addition there is the problem that many people mix the different terms with each other and so a privateer becomes a pirate, who didn’t have much in common with it. Even though the line between the two was quite thin and a privateer sometimes exceeded the limit of what was allowed.
How now the life on board of a pirate ship looked like… good question, but it is noticeable that some of them have served in a navy before. This could indicate that there was a basic discipline and leadership on board. As for the rest, like life on board, there were watches and how were they organized, how were punishments enforced and how was the plunder distributed and so on. Unfortunately everybody is groping in the dark and so the fictional and the few real ones will always mix.
Happy talk like a pirate day, me hearties!
