I caught a mystery screening of Primate (2026) at my local Cinemark.

That is not how chimpanzees work. That is not how rabies works. That is not how putting pressure on a bite wound works. Also, even the characters who survived realistically should have died.

But the score is fucking terrific. And for as genuinely stupid as it is, the acting is solid and it does create good suspense.

I like how at the end of the movie they are all together and happy as if there aren't multiple mutilated bodies everywhere and the dad isn't going to face serious legal consequences.

A super intelligent chimpanzee with rabies, what could go wrong?

I HATE when horror films rely on the cast being mentally disabled for the story to make sense. This should’ve been over 15 minutes in when the dad found out Ben had been bitten by a mongoose, you IMMEDIATELY take the animal to a vet, not wait for your friend to get off work and check it out. You DEFINITELY do NOT leave your daughters alone with said potential rabid animal.

Moreover, why the fuck didn’t the girls call 9/11 as soon as he started acting weird? Yes let’s just all go around a fucking pool and look like idiots. People’s obsession with building houses in these remote secluded areas with no access to quick emergency services also annoys the fuck out of me. There’s just so many horror film cliches in this that made it a chore to sit through at times. It is extremely violent and they didn’t hold back with the brutality of the deaths so there’s that.

Happy ending, BUT congrats because the dad is civilly and criminally liable for the deaths of 5 young people. But hey at least he’ll finally stop being a deadbeat and actually spend time with this kids! 😑
