TODAY'S FACT IS

Did you know that the Primrose Moth (Schinia florida) can be found across much of Canada and the US, from the Atlantic coast and west into Alberta? They get their name from their affinity to evening primroses. These nocturnal moths will rest on the flowers during the day and will lay their eggs on the flower buds. The larvae will eat the buds (but not the leaves) of their host until their ready to pupate, which they will do underground and through the winter.

Bug of the Day

The evening primroses are in bloom, and that means it's time to religiously check them for primrose moths (Schinia florida)! I have found quite a few this year, which is odd for my yard, maybe it's because the spring was so wet.

I know this picture is screaming PINK MOTH but trust me, they blend into the foliage this time of year.

this is the primrose moth (schinia florida) and its my favourite moth because i like the colour pink and it uses these colours to camouflage as wilting primrose flowers (which typically go light pink when they begin to wilt)
