@vida-connor asked for: “i’ve been thinking it over and this… this was never going to work out.”(off of tumblr) for Zoe. Lmao, this started out as pure angst and then turned into something more.
{Angst Prompt List}
If there was one thing that Zoe hated more than having to watch Zander cut himself open for a spell, it was having to watch Zander hurt himself because of other’s stupidity. Zoe hated feeling powerless. She knew Zander meant well, but the moment Zander had snapped at Jasper for being weak it stung her. They all knew Ebony was still mourning Violet’s death. They all were still mourning Violet’s death. But if there was one thing that had resulted from Violet’s death, it was the clear cut understanding of who they were, what they were doing, how vast the world was and how powerful their opponents were.
Jasper perhaps had started to break down. Zoe didn’t blame him. Their group had seemed untouchable. Invincible. And then Violet was cut down right in front of them. How could Jasper not start to crack? Violet was an outcast like him. The illegitimate child like him. She was born in Yaqut. It would have been strange if Jasper hadn’t felt even at least a little bit of responsibility for her life as her Prince.
He had cracked and started panicking. So when he had hit the line and started freaking out near Ebony and consequently making them all hurt more, Zander had decided to take matters into his own hands. He did it for Zoe, he did it for Ebony, perhaps he even did it for Jasper himself.
Chou was wrong. They couldn’t handle themselves on their own. She and Krehan should have never left. Ebony was hollow, Jasper was breaking, Zoe was infuriated by her own powerlessness, Ilana was stuck in some sort of slow motion limbo and Zander was trying as hard as he could to keep them all alive. No matter how powerful they were, no matter what they had seen, no matter what kind of responsibilities lay on their shoulders, they were all children. None of them had reached adulthood. Not even Ilana by elven standards.
They were falling apart, after one setback. And it was cruel to think of Violet’s death as just a setback, but in this world where hundreds were dying everyday because of Vlad and Hypatia, Violet’s death was truly, nothing more than a glorified setback.
Words weren’t getting through to anyone, although Zander was trying. Zoe wondered how he managed to keep his head. Or was it the darkness of his soul that the dark arts constantly kept on the surface that made him so immune to Violet’s death?
None of them were strangers to death. They had confronted death far too many times for it to be normal and yet, Violet...oh, Violet.
“We need to sort this, now.” It was Ilana who had finally spoke up after dinner. None of them answered, they simply shuffled their feet and sat in a circle. It was silent save for the crackling of the fire and the sound of the forest. No one dared to speak first.
“What are we going to do? Violet was our tracker for the spell.” Zander pointed out. They had been moving aimlessly for days, not sure where to go but desperate to get as far away from the scene as possible. Zoe wanted to agree that it was a valid point, but even logic made her angry.
Ebony made a small sound and then fiddled with the sleeves of her dress. They were all trying to keep the grief in, trying to appear strong, by not letting the tears fall. But Zoe could see of course, by not crying, they were showing how weak they really were. Jasper breaking was a perfect example.
“I…” Ilana rasped. “I can’t carry on like this. As soon as we make it to the next town and get supplies, I’m going to leave the group for a while.” All of them looked up at the elf sharply. “I only have just realized that I’m not strong enough, to keep Hypatia sealed away. I must become stronger and for that reason, I’m going to travel into the deepest depths of the elven forests.”
Zander started shaking for the first time since Violet’s death.
“You’re leaving.” He simply stated.
“I am.” She said, with just as little emotion in her voice.
Ebony slowly got to her feet.
“I’m going to depart for Yaqut tomorrow. I have things I need to sort out.” Ebony’s chin was raised and the veins in her neck were defined against her colored skin. Zoe clenched her fists together. She knew it, they were falling apart.
“Ilana, take me with you to the elven forests.” Zander suddenly said. “I know I can become stronger there.” Zoe’s eyes widened and she turned to Zander. Zander gently patted her hand.
“Alexander, you’re going to leave Zoe?” Jasper cried out.
“Zoe...Zoe can take care of herself. If not, Chou wouldn’t have left her.” Zander said slowly, as if speaking the words were physically difficult. Zoe nodded.
“I’m going to go to the wild forests of Qishin.” Zoe squeezed her hand out of Zander’s grasp.
“What?” Zander hissed.
“Zoe! That’s too dangerous!” Jasper pointed out.
“Those forests are unbreachable!” Ebony said.
“They are elvish forests are they not?”
“No elves have been there in centuries!” Ilana informed her.
“That’s where you’re wrong.” Zoe said firmly.
“May the the stars guide you, Spell Caster Zoe Flamouria, child from Nowhere.”
“I will go with you.” Jasper said stonily.
“No, I will go alone. You are not allowed to come with me. I’ve been thinking it over and this… this was never going to work out.” Zoe looked Jasper in the eyes and he recoiled as if burned. “We’re all too small, too weak. We cannot do this.”
“I will then, go to the dwarf caves in Yula.” Jasper said softly.
The next morning, the alliance broke apart. They had lost. Without Violet, they had lost.

"I never meant to hurt you" for Zoe and Zander bc pain is fun
Zoe’s hands were shaking. Ilana was white, her lips trembling. Violet was curled up in a tiny little ball behind Zoe and Jasper was the only one moving, rushing forwards to Zoe and Zander, his face contorted with anxiety.
Zander dropped down to the ground and an agonized whimper left Zoe’s lips as she scrambled to catch him.
“I’m-I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. Zander, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen. Zander, Zander? I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Zoe rambled in terror as she tried to to do something, anything. She suddenly felt Zander being pulled out of her arms and she screamed as she tried to pull Zander closer to her.
“Zoe, Zoe, stop it! Look at me!” Jasper snapped. Zoe looked up at him, eyes wide and scared. “You don’t have healing abilities! None of us here do! The only one who does is Chou, we have to find her right now. Do you understand?” Zoe nodded shakily. She reluctantly let Jasper pull Zander out of her arms and then followed him as he dashed back towards where they assumed camp was. Ilana was quick to pick up Violet and run after them.
It took them a while to find camp and Chou instantly rushed out to meet them. She lifted Zander from Jasper’s arms with her inhuman strength and went to one of the tents. Ebony and Krehan hurried to them.
“What happened?” Ebony asked Zoe. Zoe stared at the ground blankly, her hands still trembling.
“I don’t know. Zoe should know, but she’s too distraught to say anything.” Jasper informed Ebony. Ebony nodded and then they all sat outside the occupied tent and waited. When Chou finally emerged from the tent she sighed and then turned to look at Zoe.
“Zoe Flamouria, how many times have I taught you to use your aura instead of blindly relying on your magic?” Chou snapped. Zoe flinched.
“I’m s-so sorry…is he OK?” Zoe looked up at Chou with eyes filled with tears. Chou sighed again and then pushed back the fringe of her hair with one hand.
“Honestly, what am I to do with the two of you?” Chou muttered. She moved forward and comfortingly put her hand on top of Zoe’s head. “He’s alright. He just woke up, so you can go talk to him.” There were cries of relief all around and everyone shot to their feet. “Only Zoe.” Chou snapped at all of them and they all meekly sat down again. Zoe got up and went into the tent. Zander was staring up at the top of the tent.
“Oh…Zoe, what happened? What am I doing here? Did I…did I do something again?” There was an alarming amount of fear in his voice.
“Oh, no, no, no, no…it was all my fault. I’m so sorry, I got distracted and retracted my aura. I’m so sorry. You went on a rampage and…I almost killed you…I’m so sorry, you were about to hurt Violet, I didn’t know what to do, I just jumped out and…I’m so sorry.” Zoe sobbed and clutched his hand.
There was a moment of utter silence and then Zander squeezed her hand.
“Thank you, for stopping me. I don’t know how much I would have hated myself if I had hurt Violet.” Zander told her, his voice warm.
“I could have just used my aura instead but I forgot to! I’m sorry!” Zoe wailed. “I almost killed you! I can’t lose you and yet I was the one who almost killed you! I’m such a poor excuse of a spell caster. What ‘leader of the next generation’, what ‘genius of our time’. I’m pathetic. I’m so sorry…” Zoe cried. “I never meant to hurt you…”
“Hey, Zoe?” Zander said quietly. “Both of us, we might have never been here if the Trouble Twins never played that prank on us. Both of us could still be in the Grey Class, slaves under Vlad’s order, or worse, Hypatia’s rule. I don’t think it was a mere coincidence that we got these powers. We’re both so far from being able to control our powers and we’re both terrified of what we’re capable of…Zoe, I’m so scared that one day, I’ll go as far as hurting you…” Zander’s voice wobbled. “I hate this…so, let’s get stronger Zoe…strong enough to protect each other.”
Zoe cried and nodded.
