Walking into his house to see Wei Wuxian in his kitchen with not only one kid, but two kids, clinging to him had not been what Wangji was expecting when in a bout of stupidity - on his part - he had handed his spare key to the other. See, Wangji should have known better. But he had told himself that he was giving the key to Wei Wuxian in case of an emergency.
“A-Xian, I heard the front doo- Oh!” A girl walked out of Wangji’s living room. Wangji was that close to strangling Wei Wuxian and demanding for answers.
“Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian called happily.
Strangling plans have been cancelled.
“You have two children and a wife,” Wangji said dumbly. Because Wei Wuxian had an infuriatingly weird ability through which he made Wangji incredibly stupid. Also he was not crying at the thought of Wei Wuxian being married. No.
As expected Wei Wuxian burst out laughing hysterically. Wangji stared blankly, feeling the strong desire to walk into his room and lock himself in there.
“A-Xian!” The girl smacked Wei Wuxian’s head and then turned to Wangji and smiled brightly. “I’m Jin Yanli, A-Xian’s older sister and this is my son, Jin Ling.”
Wangji did not comment on the fact that Wei Wuxian had told him once that he had no living relatives. His neighbor had been drunk at the time and had come into Wangji’s apartment in the middle of the night even though Wangji had tried to get him to leave. He only paused at her statement for a second before he put the thought away. Families were not always made by blood.
“Pardon the intrusion. We were supposed to have dinner at A-Xian’s house, but he set the kitchen on fire and so, he said that we could just quickly make dinner here and go back to-”
“Are you hurt?” Wangji blurted before he could stop himself. He mentally smacked himself. Interrupting someone was horribly rude and interrupting a lady was even ruder.
“Oh, I’m fine!” Wei Wuxian beamed.
“No!” Wen Yuan chose that moment to speak up. He grabbed at Wei Wuxian’s left arm and then turned to look at Wangji. “Daddy, hurt his arm!” the small boy informed him.
“A-Yuan!” Wei Wuxian said in surprise.
“You’re hurt?” Wangji asked, instantly on alert again.
“No! It was a tiny burn!” Wei Wuxian waved his hands around.
“You shouldn’t underestimate burns,” Wangji said sternly.
“I know! I know! But it’s already been treated!” Wei Wuxian said. Wangji was vaguely aware of Jin Yanli watching their conversation with a look of amusement on her face, but he was rather preoccupied with the small bandage he could see on Wei Wuxian’s arm.
“That’s right,” Jin Yanli spoke up. “I took care of it as soon as I could. I have a trouble making family, so I’m usually patching everyone up,” Yanli chuckled. “I was telling A-Xian to call you before we came in here but he assured me that the two of you are close and that it would be fine. I’m glad A-Xian and A-Yuan are not alone.”
Wangji blinked.
“I didn’t think we were close?” Wangji murmured.
The smiles and laughs and even the small children noises vanished instantly. Jin Yanli had a look of utter horror on her face and Wei Wuxian looked like Wangji had just tried to kidnap Wen Yuan. Wangji wondered what on earth he had done wrong.
“Lan Zhan! What are you saying?” Wei Wuxian cried out in what seemed like near distress. “We are close! Very close!”
“We are?” Wangji asked in confusion. He supposed he didn’t know what ‘close’ meant in social standards. The only people Wangji associated with the word ‘close’ were his brother and his uncle. He guessed not having any friends was finally having side effects on his life.
“Yes!” Wei Wuxian said. “You’re going to make A-Yuan cry! He thinks of you as a very nice uncle!” Wangji glanced at the child who was look up at him with glassy eyes.
“Well…” Wangji tried to amend his statement. “I guess we are close then.” He was not eager to have Wen Yuan cry because of him. He had a rather soft spot for the child.
Then, Wangji remembered Jin Yanli’s presence. He was being terribly rude to a guest in his house!
“I apologize,” Wangji turned to her. “I didn’t introduce myself,” Wei Wuxian was like that, making Wangji forget anything else around him existed like some kind of wild hurricane. “I am Lan Wangji and my courtesy name is Lan Zhan,” Wangji tilted his head in greeting.
“Oh no, that’s alright! But my! It’s rare to see someone these days with a courtesy name! I thought A-Xian was the only one with a courtesy name around!” Jin Yanli commented in interest.
“It’s alright if you don’t use my courtesy name. I understand that it can cause some confusion.” Wangji often told people it was fine to ignore his courtesy name. Not that that stopped Wei Wuxian from loudly using his courtesy name. Wangji’s menace of a neighbor had been insistent that they both use each other’s courtesy names because it was amusing that they both had courtesy names.
“If that’s alright, then I’ll do just that!” Jin Yanli beamed. Wangji thought that her smile was very much like Wei Wuxian’s smile when he was happy.
“If I may ask, I saw you coming from the living roo-” Wangji started, but of course, Wei Wuxian had to interrupt with a loud cry, remembering that there was food on the stove. He ran back to the kitchen, both children clinging effortlessly to his legs. Jin Yanli giggled.
“A-Yuan and A-Ling were playing in the living room so I was cleaning it up. I’m sorry for the mess that they caused.” Jin Yanli turned to look at the living room and Wangji followed her. The sofa cushions were in different places on the floor. There was a small bag of toys and baby things that Wangji could tell Jin Yanli had been filling up when he had arrived.
“It’s no problem,” Wangji told her. “I usually clean up after Wei Wuxian and Wen Yuan when they come over.” Compared to the mess that the father and son duo made together, the two children had barely done anything. Jin Yanli turned to look at him, that look of horror on her face once again.
“Oh! I apologize for my little brother. He’s always been that way!” Jin Yanli said urgently.
“No, it’s fine,” Wangji reassured her. He looked towards the kitchen where Wen Yuan was crying and begging his father not to put chillies into the food. Wangji sighed. “Wei Wuxian, I always tell you to watch what you feed children.” Wangji started to walk towards the kitchen.
“Oh my,” Jin Yanli chuckled in amusement behind him. Wangji turned to look at her and she only smiled at him. He tried not to dwell on the scarily knowing look on her face and he went to the kitchen to save Wen Yuan’s taste buds.
Let’s Face It I’m Cute - 11 Acorn Lane (idk how I came across the guy who made this particular video but I enjoy watching him dance)
I’m Not Calling You A Liar - Florence + The Machine (I’m disappointed in myself for not adding more F+tM songs to these playlists)
Another Irish Drinking Song - DaVinci’s Notebook (one of my friends in high school showed me this song, and at the same time my English class happened to be reading Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt so that was one heckaroonie of of coinkidink)
Send me a name and I’ll make a little playlist out of the letters!

He wakes up warm, and for a moment he’s 12 years old in a stranger’s bedroom, wondering what on Earth possessed him to fall asleep on top of the most dangerous person he’d ever had the misfortune to meet. The sound of a shutter snapping brings him back to the present. Well, that and the bundle of warmth on his chest shifting.
He opens his eyes a little, enough to make out the faint afternoon light streaming in through the bedroom curtains, and the soft brown hair tucked under his chin, tickling his neck. Voices reach his ears, but his mind immediately recognizes them as Shion and Inukashi, labels them as safe, and tunes them out. He feels content. Another shutter sound.
“Shion,” he sighs, disgusted at how breathily his hoarse voice shapes the name. A cool, gentle hand lays on his forehead. Shion.
“Awwww, Shion, you didn’t tell me he whispered your name in his sleep! Just how whipped is this gu-ohshithe'sawake.”
He finally gets his eyes to open so he can glare at Inukashi, who had wisely scrambled out of reach. “The fuck are you doing in my bedroom?”
“You were supposed to watch the kid for the weekend,” they say flatly, “not get the both of you sick, stupid.”
He feels the urge to growl something rude at them, but at that moment the warm thing on top of him – the kid in question, apparently – tightens his little fingers in Nezumi’s shirt and makes a whimpering sound. Nezumi rubs his hand up and down the kid’s back slowly and is rewarded by the kid relaxing, and also by Shion’s amused smile, until he realizes what he’s doing. But by then Inukashi is already smirking and it’s too late to try and hide it. Another shutter sound.
He glares weakly at Shion, who stares back at him innocently, as if he wasn’t holding a camera and taking pictures of him napping with a small child. “You’ve slept all day,” Shion tells him happily. He’s always so ecstatic when Nezumi sleeps in. “You and Junior both.”
Nezumi rolls his eyes. “The kid needs a better name than Junior.”
“He has a better name!” Inukashi exclaims, affronted. “It’s just confusing when I say ‘Hey Shion’ and two people look up, that’s all.”
“I don’t have that problem.”
“That’s cuz you call Junior ‘Hey you’!”
“Sounds like a good enough name to me.”
“Says the guy who calls himself Rat,” Inukashi mutters.
Shion laughs, making Nezumi lose his train of thought. He’d had a really good comeback, but his head is so fuzzy, and the kid is so warm, and Shion’s laugh is such a beautiful thing. It’s all really very distracting.
“Heeeyyyy Nezumiiiiii!” Inukashi waves their hands in front of Nezumi’s face. Really, a few years ago this never would’ve happened. Inukashi used to be scared of him, whatever happened to that?
You became a huge fucking softie, that’s what, his mind whispered. What the hell are you doing?
He ignores both Inukashi and his mind. “Shion, I’m cold,” he says without thinking, which is what happens when one ignores one’s mind, and blindly reaches out for him.
“You’ve got three blankets and a mini human on you,” he hears Inukashi mutter disbelievingly, shortly followed by, “Oh my god,” as it clicks, but he doesn’t care because Shion is smiling like he’s just been handed an environmental science textbook, and stretching out to lay beside Nezumi on the bed, curling up to Nezumi’s side.
“Hey!” Inukashi snaps, though they don’t sound annoyed at all. “Can I have my child back, or?”
“I’m not waking Hey You up,” Shion answers, because he’s a little shit, but he’s Nezumi’s little shit. Inukashi groans dramatically.
“I’m so raiding your kitchen for this,” they mutter, climbing off the bed, as if they didn’t do that every time they came over, and Nezumi closes his eyes with a smile.
“You two wouldn’t happen to be the people I’m looking for, are you?” A pleasantly familiar voice asked. Zoe spun around so quickly, Jasper worried she’d slip in the mud and fall over. Instantly Zoe had thrown her arms around the tiny cloaked figure.
“Ebony! It’s been so long!” Zoe gushed and Jasper stood up, a grin on his face.
“Yes, it has been! I see your hair has grown out!” Ebony chuckled.
“Well, what about you?” Zoe tried to peer into Ebony’s hood without pulling it off. They were all trying to travel incognito after all.
“Well, you’ll see that later,” Ebony grinned.
“Ebony, it’s been long,” Jasper bowed his head. “Your presence is even more impressive that it used to be,” Jasper said.
“Oh my, you can feel the power in the earth?” Ebony asked with a sly smile. “It seems we’ve all become significantly stronger. Is it just the three of us so far?” Ebony asked, dusting her cloak slightly.
“We’re still waiting for Alexander and Ilana,” Jasper explained. Zoe was quietly digging through Ebony’s bag without asking and Jasper wanted to roll his eyes at her. Of course, she did whatever she wanted without anyone else’s permission.
“Oh yes, I met with Chou on my way here,” Ebony spoke up. Jasper and Zoe started and looked at Ebony. “I know where we are to meet her after we have been joined by Zander and Ilana.”
“Alright then, we’ll discuss it when those two get here.” Zoe nodded before turning back towards the bag. “Hey! Ebony, you still have my bottle of purified air!” Zoe said excitedly.
“Yes, indeed. It has helped me much in growing some of the best plants.” Ebony grinned. “I’m no longer going to hide and hold back my power. Once we start our next mission with Chou, I’m going to go all out.”
“That sounds promising!” Zoe grinned. Suddenly she sat up straight and turned. Ebony and Jasper turned to follow her line of sight. Two tall figures were walking towards them. Zoe leaped up and ran forward almost screaming.
“Oh there they are,” Jasper said.
“Zander!”
“Zoe!”
Alexander, who was now much taller than Zoe, swept her up in a hug and Ilana simply laughed as she continued to walk towards them. And then Alexander put Zoe on the ground and held out his hand. She slapped her hand against his and the two of them laughed.
“What are they doing?” Ebony asked. Just then the two of them started slapping their hands together and doing all kinds of random crazy actions together in perfect sync and Jasper, Ebony and Ilana gaped at them in confusion. The people around them had noticed too and were staring.
“What’s going on now?” Ilana asked. The three of them hurried over to the twins and then Zoe struck out at Alexander with her fist. He instantly dodged and he kicked at her. She leaped into the air and landed behind him, throwing another punch. Alexander bent forward, dodging her punch again and sweeping his leg at her feet yet again. She jumped all over again and then exasperated by the amount of attention they were gathering, Jasper reached out to the two of them.
“Both of you, this is not the time to-” Both of them grabbed his arms at the same time and sent him flying before he could tell what was happening. He crashed through the wall of a shabby building. He shot back out of the building and onto his feet.
“You two want to go?” he roared in outrage, reaching for his first sword.
Alexander and Zoe were laughing wildly.
“Sorry!” Zoe called, laughing while clutching her stomach.
“I didn’t mean to do that, sorry!” Alexander called as well.
“Enough,” Ilana smacked the back of Alexander’s head and Ebony lightly punched Zoe’s head. “We need to get out of here before the guard is called on us.”
“You five there!” A loud voice shouted. Alexander and Zoe glanced at each other and then ran in the opposite direction and towards the forest. Ilana turned to Jasper and rolled her eyes before running after the twins and Ebony and Jasper followed.
By the time they had thrown off the guards they were well into the forest.
“Alright, you two idiots, what on earth was that?” Ilana asked.
“We were both trying out a secret handshake,” Zoe giggled. Ebony whacked Zoe’s head again. “OK, OK, sorry!” Zoe said, still laughing. “Zander and I were trying to see how far we could read each other through our connection. It was really fun and then when Jasper tried to interfere, I wasn’t planning on throwing him that far, but with Zander reading my movements, we both ended up throwing him.” Zoe bent over.
“So you were planning on throwing me anyways!” Jasper snapped angrily.
“Alright, alright, let’s settle down,” Ilana said, grabbing Alexander who was laughing himself silly and flipping him over her shoulder. He met the ground with a loud thud, which shut up both of the twins. “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen each other, let’s catch up on things.”
“Although, you and Zander were super close,” Zoe said teasingly.
“That has nothing to do with anything!” Ilana snapped, flushing red.
