Pyrus and Zera sketch, inspired by Traditions
Let’s talk about Prince Pyrus
Okay so this may be a bit rambly due to nicotine but fuck it I wanna discourse about this spicy little muffin, here:
Yeah this guy.
Alright, so we first meet him in Episode 103, “Born In Fire”. This is the first time we actually get to see the people of Fire up close and personal, and actually get names to those faces that both Graveheart and Cryos go on about in the first two.
He’s a kid. He’s a fucking KID. Estimates are still iffy, but I always pegged him as ageing from about 14-16 throughout the series’ entire run (as we see him physically ageing as well). And while he’s CALLED a Prince, and answers to Prince, he’s a King. Of a fucking planet. And the only real help he gets is from the Vizier, who’s not only bigoted and close-minded, but also loves to remind Pyrus of his lacking age any chance he gets.
Now, in the first episode, we first see him being a kid: fluffing about on his favourite bridge while practising what looks like martial arts. He looks like a dork, a point only made further when he reacts with excitement - not trepidation - at the news that his STILL-PRESUMED ARCHED ENEMIES are about to set foot on his planet to “chat”. He’s not stupid; he knows his history and knows that this has been attempted, before, and with immensely poor results. But he doesn’t care: he’s an optimist. The picture above is his expression upon seeing the ship of his sworn enemy, Cryos, landing his personal craft onto the surface.
Cue to that landing: the Vizier gets shirty and stupid, and even Cryos is like “oh come on, not this shit again” when he tries to get them all arrested, but Pyrus shuts them all down. Granted, he lets himself be goaded by the Vizier into forcing both Cryos and Graveheart into the test of mettle known as the “Trial By Fire” (something that could easily get Cryos killed in minutes, being made of ice and all), but he’s still optimistic. In fact, we see him later brooding over this decision, as though maybe it wasn’t the best one he could have made in the face of offered peace.
Now, Cryos, being both a hardass and a softie, allowed his spitfire of a meddling daughter, Zera, to tag along on this mission, citing that since the Prince is pretty much the same age as her, she should go, too. This is both good and bad. Why? Because when Pyrus is truly conflicted over his decision to send Cryos and Graveheart through the Trial, and he tries to vent that frustration (also caused by her, who yelled at him in his own throneroom over it and basically called him stupid while insulting his dead father), she tries to corner him on that bridge, and THIS SHIT HAPPENS:
Good job, Zera, you’re an idiot. But it really shows just how much Pyrus gives a shit about peace, because he doesn’t hesitate to grab her and rescue her, despite the possible harm it could give him - and it does, despite her nannonite shield. But the point is that he rescues her, without even batting an eye, and especially without affection, as all she’s done at this point is snarl and insult him.
And of course at this point this is when Beast Drones show up to stop the peace talks and pretty much gut Planet Fire as best as they can while everyone is distracted (Thanks, Vizier). Which leads me to my next major point: That fucking bridge.
Shortly after rescuing Zera, Pyrus explains that the bridge was made for him by his father, and it’s a place that he likes to think the best. But when they both end up surrounded by the Drones, his only course of action is to destroy that bridge, SEVERING HIS LAST PHYSICAL TIE TO HIS DEAD FATHER.
This kid is not fucking around when it comes to peace. He doesn’t, at this point, much care for Zera, but he cares for what she stands for, and the trust she represents. Therefore, when stacked against his own personal feelings and the good of his people, he picks his people - and as a result, peace.
Which, as a result of his own actions, as well as Cryos and Graveheart surviving the Trial, does finally happen. Pyrus, in the span of one afternoon, has managed to do what his own father couldn’t do in years - and it was because Pyrus was willing to make sacrifices to do it.
He’s a fucking KING. And that’s only in the FIRST EPISODE!
I could go on, but I’m sure you’re all bored. But if you’re not, I will! I dunno. It was bothering me, and there are tons of examples of this in future episodes (especially season 2), but I feel like I’ve gone on for too long.
Where are the Shadow Raiders stans at? The fandom doesn't deserve to die out
