I headed out to #Canstage last weekend to see #PrinceHamlet. This was a visually stark, haunting, and metaphorically clever adaptation and abridgement of Hamlet. And it is told half in English and half in #AmericanSignLaunguage. It was worth it; it was above and beyond the most emotionally impactful final swordfight between Hamlet and Laertes I've ever had the priviledge to experience. (And yeah that includes the Cumberbatch version). And the Ophelia! Oh, I did cry along with Opheliam My big concern with this staging was that the Hamlet started the show at 100% and had nowhere to go after that. And that the motivations behind the actions were muddy. Several patrons asked me in the bathroom (after overhearing me discuss the show with my mother) why Gertrude drank drom the poisoned cup and why Ophelia comitted suicide. These are things the narrative, the works (signed or spoken), and the performance shpuld have made clear. Shakespeare shoild not be only for those who already know Shakespeare. But I can tell you - Hearing or D/deaf/HoH - you gotta see it. If only for Horatio: the narrator, the interpreter, and the actual star.
