wc: ~2k. Caine/Reader, second person POV. soft, fluff, implications of mutual pining, pre-relationship.
a/n: it's time... this will be my first attempt at writing Caine, so I hope it's relatively accurate to his character. at the very least, I hope the fluff is enjoyable, hehe
With today's adventure being relatively short, you and the group are left to your own devices for the time being. Most of them like to hang out in the main room in their free time, and while you're also willing to do so, you just feel...restless today. Seems like the adventure must've left you with more energy than usual – some days you're completely down for the count, hence why this instance is particularly unusual.
So, to try and wear yourself down some, you step away from the main room and begin to explore. You know better by now than to wander into certain areas or open certain doors, but something about the vast, almost endless spaces of the giant circus that Caine had put together just begs for a curious mind such as your own to take a look around.
You also know by now that the others aren't too fond of Caine – and you can't really blame them sometimes – but there's something about him that's charming to you nonetheless. He's naïve, but he seems to truly want the best for everyone.
He just wants everyone to be happy, and you can't help appreciating the effort he puts into trying to do so.
At one point, you happen upon what looks to be some sort of storage closet. It's hard to say, honestly; the shelves mostly just carry random shapes and objects akin to what you'd find anywhere else in the circus, so your only suspicions that it's a storage closet is a very unused mop and its bucket, as well as a few real boxes scattered alongside the low polygonal objects.
Carefully, you settle one of the boxes on the floor and pick around inside for a moment. There's nothing overly noteworthy, aside from some arts and crafts supplies that you're sure Gangle might appreciate. However, you soon pause when you notice what looks to be a sticker sheet tucked between a few stray papers. It's unused, not a single sticker missing, all of which are simple golden stars with a smiley face and glitter filter under the plastic covering.
As you slowly toy with the edge of one to try and peel it from the sheet, an idea comes to mind that makes you stop. It's...embarrassing, somewhat, but you figure maybe he'll be receptive to it. Worst comes to worst, he'll hopefully just pretend it didn't happen, and you'll be able to do the same.
You step back out from what you can now safely call a storage closet, the sticker sheet held close to your chest, and pause to take in a breath. Then, you call out, "Hey, Caine?"
"Heeello, _____!" Though you anticipate it coming, you're still taken aback some when the ringmaster himself pops out of thin air right in front of you, floating a few feet just above you. You try your best to mask your mild spook with a small smile as he continues, theatrically twirling his cane and adjusting how he floats in the air so the golden epaulettes on his shoulders settle more neatly, "What can I do for you, my little peach cobbler?"
You can't help briefly taking amusement in the silly "nickname" he used for you this time. He always calls the group something new when they return from an adventure, though you can't really recall if he's ever done the same with individual circus members, like he does with you. The thought that perhaps it is only something he does with you crosses your mind, though you quickly clear your throat before you can let the idea get to you. "Well, I was looking around since I have some extra free time after today's adventure, and I have something I'd like to give you."
"Gasp! You— You have something to give to me?" Caine zips closer to you, his cane floating just nearby as he puts both of his hands to his lower jaw, as if trying to cover his "mouth" in shock. You watch as his pupils dilate to the point of covering nearly half his eyeballs, with cartoonish sparkles around them to boot. He's in complete awe, though his eyes shrink closer to their usual size as he darts them away whilst murmuring rather loudly, "No human's ever given me a gift before...!"
"It's, uh..." You pause momentarily when Caine turns back to you, his eyes immediately dilating again, to the point you can barely see the blue and green of his irises. You can't help smiling at his enthusiasm, elaborating, "It's not much, but I figured... You put in a lot of work for these adventures, so I think you deserve a little something as...as thanks."
You pull the sticker sheet away from your chest, and it's as if Caine's just now noticing what you've been holding this whole time as he eyes follow yours. He gasps again, though this time it's an actual gasp and not him just saying it, and he's strangely quiet while you work on peeling off the one you were toying with previously. With one edge already sticking out, it's a quick effort, and when you look back up, Caine's already staring at you again like you've hung the stars in the sky, even though all you have is a cheap star sticker on your index finger.
You try your best to ignore the strange feeling in the chest area of your "circus body" and ask, your voice softer than you anticipated, "Could you come closer, please?"
"Oh!" Caine "blinks," and his pupils are back to their usual size. Without even looking its way, he quickly reaches out to grab his cane, given it'd started drifting away in the air. "Why, ah, yes, of course I can!"
With that, he lowers himself closer to the floor, but still not quite enough to let his shoes touch the red carpeting. You don't mind that, as now he's close enough for you to reach out – disregarding the next brief gasp he lets out and his sudden clutch on his cane – and carefully stick the little star on the black lapel of his suitcoat. His eyes watch your every move intently, and while he seems consistently shocked, he doesn't seem...put off. Hopefully. Even if he acts like an open book sometimes, it's also a bit hard to pick up what he's actually feeling before his boisterous and loud ringmaster persona takes over again.
But right now, he's silent as your touch lingers on him, just to try and smooth down the sticker so it completely sticks. The glitter on the sticker almost match the much more rich and sparkly texture of his suitcoat, and you find yourself smiling at this. Even if the difference in quality is noticeable, it still fits him, in a way. To you, it's perfect for him.
"There," You breathe out, softly, as you carefully retract your hand. Looking back up at him, you're somewhat surprised to see that look of awe in his eyes again, with some kind of fuzzy glaze over them, but what concerns you more is the utter lack of a vocal response. Knowing Caine, he'd be talking endlessly by now with his equally endless train of thought.
You feel your nerves flaring up as you ask, "Is that alright?"
Both Caine's upper jaw and his shoulders just barely lift in quiet surprise as he seems to snap out of whatever daze he was in. He lets out a quiet "Ah—" before he quickly zips back up into the air, reestablishing a more respectable distance between the two of you. "YES! It's quite alright! Who wouldn't be on cloud nine after receiving such a thoughtful gift, hahaha!"
You hardly think a dollar-store quality star sticker you found in one of his storage closets counts as a thoughtful gift, but who are you to look a gift horse in the mouth? You quietly shrug, smiling again as you bring the sheet closer to yourself once more. "I figured I'd show my appreciation since the others don't seem as...receptive. Just..."
You pause for a second, suddenly feeling your hold on the sheet falter while you attempt to maintain eye contact. "Just know that I appreciate what you do. And you."
Caine's lower jaw nearly falls out of place in response to your admission. "Y-You—" His hat slips off his upper jaw, which he grabs and begins to toy with the rim while his cane begins to float away again. His pupils once again begin to dilate heavily, this time with a faint sheen to them. "You appreciate...me—?"
You startle when his eyes suddenly bluescreen, a faint high-pitched tune similar to old dial-up emitting from somewhere inside him as his body completely freezes up. Though you initially let out a nervous chuckle, your eyes dart over to his drifting cane and reach out to take it with your free hand as you question, "Uh, Caine?"
...Surely you didn't break him, right?
It's only a moment later that he snaps back to reality, his jaws clamping together and shielding his eyes as he shakes his head so violently that all you see is a blur of red and white. When he finally stills and opens up again, his eyes immediately land on yours before he suddenly turns his entire body away. Slapping his top hat back where it's supposed to be, he exclaims, "WOW, ah, would you look at the time! Gotta go, ahah, get to work on the next adventure for tomorrow!"
Out of nowhere, seemingly snapping back to his ringmaster persona, Caine swoops down and close to you again, disregarding the way you faintly startle as he "whispers" behind one of his hands to you, "This one's gonna knock you outta the park! I've been putting a lot of work into it for quite some time now, and I think you're gonna love it!"
While you're not sure what exactly he's implying with the emphasis on you in particular, you can only hope that's a good thing. You smile again, telling him, "I'm looking forward to it then, Caine. See you tomorrow?"
"Of course you will!" As he talks, he seems to notice his cane in your hand, and reaches out to take it, though not without clasping your hand between his with a small pat. With his cane back in his grasp, Caine drifts higher up into the air again. "Well, I best be going now! Don't get too bored without me around, haha!"
You only let out a small chuckle as he disappears. The atmosphere is strangely quiet once more – it always is, right after he leaves.
Letting out a quiet sigh, you ignore the persistent fluttering in your chest and turn back to the storage closet. Since he didn't seem to mind you using his stickers like that, then maybe he won't mind if you take that box of art supplies.
You let your thoughts drift to the texture of his suitcoat and the subtle warmth underneath as you step back in to grab the box. And as you step out, you swear you still feel the sensation of his gloved hands around yours in that split moment before he left. You know you'll have to pull yourself together soon so the others don't start asking questions, but until then, you take your time walking back to the main room and wonder if there's anything in particular he likes that you could draw for him.
Maybe you'll ask him next time. If he appreciates being given a little sticker so much, then you'd like to find or work on other things to gift him. Plus, with his not-so-subtle admission of never receiving a gift before, you know you can't just stop with the sticker.
After putting in so much work to try and make you and the others happy, you think he deserves the same – someone that wants to make him happy too. And you're already more than willing to be that someone.
