A first person drabble about Princess Some and Qila
We met when I was a young girl visiting the ocean, enchanted by the shells scattered on the beach, the way the sand was swept out from beneath my toes by the waves, by the salt in the air and the long strands of kelp laid across the shore like fallen monsters from the deep.
She skipped along the surf, sunlight caught in her hair and laughter in the wind. The gulls followed her, calling out with rough voices as she conversed with them.
We wandered the tidepools and climbed rocks, dodging the razor sharp edges of barnacles and muscles, dripping blood from the cuts and scrapes.
"Who are you talking to?"
They always asked me that. I guess they couldn't see her.
"You'll forget me one day, like them, everyone does."
I promised her I wouldn't.
I swore. Pinkies twisted and linked. Thumbs pressed together. Hands grasped and words sealed.
The secrets of childhood. She existed in the shared secrets and laughter, in the motes of dust in sunlight, in hidden passages and wishes and catching floats in spiderwebs.
I grew up though, I got taller, I aged but she remained the same.
We'd walk through the city, catching bubbles on our fingers, snowflakes on our tongues, and raindrops in our hair. We'd cast coins into the fountains, the wells, the cups of beggars, making wishes, granting them with hushed excitement.
Every birthday she'd say it, "You'll forget me soon."
And every birthday I would promise: we were friends forever. I'd never forget her.
And then, one day, when I was old and gray and age had settled into my bones, time had caught up with me. I laid in bed, the life fading from by body, weak and frail.
"Who are you talking to?" they would ask as I talked to her, the sunlight shining through her eyes even in the dark of night.
"Just an old friend," I would tell them. "Just an old friend."
She would just smile, joy at our shared secret, at our shared world caught between motes of dust in sunlight.
It happened one night though, when I asked for them to open the window, when the fireflies floated about in the warm air and the curtain of plant lights rustled with our secrets.
I sighed and left behind the age, left behind the world of rules and work and responsibility. She took my hand, smiled, and we slipped into the night, skipping across rocks lit by moonlight
Ranking of OCs: silliest, best hair, best at cooking, clumsiest, nerdiest, most cheerful, calmest, scariest when angry.
Silliest: Probably Princess Some because she’s just willing to be silly and goofy and not care what people think so long as she’s having fun.
Best Hair: Den would die if he wasn’t picked for this. Like, he’s the one character who consistently cares about his hair. And like, it’s one of his highest priorities.
Best at Cooking: Aldri. Mostly because she’s actually paid to cook people food. And everyone else isn’t.
Clumsiest: That’s a tie between Den and Fren. They’re both pretty clumsy.
Nerdiest: Oh god. I have too many nerdy characters. Fren, Rato, Lem, Nes, Sen, Plin, Carrots, Digits, Che II, Mald, Noddle Pannrig, Tanno Grenich, Uren, Jolnde, Klim Tog, Mosri, Sned, Obviri, Qotilet, Table (of Table and Chair), and then cow nerds, Bos and Ure, ... and well, those are the ones who for sure are on the “DEF NERDS” list. There’s a lot more who could be on the “yeah, they’re nerds but a little more low key about it.
Most Cheerful: Princess Some, Qila, Princess Thisse I
Calmest: Lem .. there are a couple others who could probably claim it from him, but he’s the only one who’s shown to be consistently calm in writing.
Scariest when angry... uh I’m pretty sure there’s more characters who could get “scary when angry” than there are nerd characters. Like my characters have a lot of potential to be really scary. (I’m pretty sure the answer here is: that depends on who you pissed off.)
Princess Some is the princess and spirit of tadpoles and frog, goldfish and minnows, salamander and newts and turtles, of worms on the ground after the rain, dragonflies fireflies and butterflies.
