“Cynthia... is that... my crown you’re wearing...?”

After finishing her morning training and cleaning up a bit, Adelaide retired to her room for some light reading by herself. At least that was what she was calling it. In truth, she was already halfway through an old Magvellian book of famous romances. Laying on her side with her back to the door, the princess was reading about a mercenary and a dancer who had opened their hearts to one another other, confessed their love, and sealed it right in the middle of a battlefield. How romantic!
Nearly swooning on the spot, Adelaide put the book down for a second a took a deep breath. Her face was as red as a beet. Deciding to open up the window for some fresh air, she realized that she wasn’t completely alone in her room after all. “C-Cynthia?! What are you doing in here?!”

“I…wouldn’t be…opposed…oh, gods, what am I thinking.”
Oh come now, don’t be shy.
“Do you think the chandelier’s made of ice, too? It’s so sparkly!”
“I wouldn’t know.” Nah followed Cynthia’s gaze towards the chandelier that hung above the ballroom. “And I don’t think they’d really appreciate me turning into a dragon to go inspect it, either. But it’s probably not out of the question, right? I mean, it looks like it could be ice. But wouldn’t that be a little...impractical? What if it started melting?”

It had been months since the UNSC had first established a colony on the planet named Spyke U72. What they didn’t know was that the planet already had life. It was divided into three major civilizations. They were the Halidom of Ylisse with King Chrom as their leader, the Kingdom of Plegia with Naeva as queen regient, and Regna Ferox with Khan Flavia as their leader. After establishing the colony, Journey into Imagination, they had sent diplomats to meet with each respected leader of each civilization. The diplomatic talks...could have gone better. The diplomat who was sent to Ylisse was the best suited for the job and kept things professional when talking to King Chrom. The diplomat who was sent to Plegia could have done a better job. He came back with a slap to the face and a reminder about never talking about a woman’s age. Last the diplomat who was sent to Regna Ferox had nothing special to report.
Trade between the four nations flourished with the colony trading some of their stainless steel knives for the other nations different weapons. Relations between the Halidom of Ylisse and Journey into Imagination became strained after recent incidents with the military drills between the two nations. The first of these incidents was when the UNSC marines were doing laps in a local field. Nearby there were some Ylissen archers who were practicing on targets. Unfortunately their position on the hill next to the field caused missed arrows to land near the running marines.
The most recent incident however was with a pelican group that was beginning their emergency maneuvers in combat. However the group had gotten too close to a group of Ylissen pegasus riders, lead by Captain Cynthia, who were training new recruits in the basics of riding their pegasusi. The roar of the pelican’s twin engines would scare most of the pegasusi on the ground, even more so in the air. As the pelican group flew by, it had spooked one of the pegasus who’s rider was one of the new recruits. The pegasus had knocked her rider off causing her to fall. Fortunately one of the veterans, who was helping to train the recruits, had caught her. The recruit had sustained some injuries but nothing to critical. When the training ended and when the recruit was taken to a healer, one of the veterans had walked up to Cynthia after words to voice her complaint. “Captain. We need to do something about those mechanical crafts that those offworlders have. They keep interfering with our training and spooking the pegasusi. We almost lost one of our new recruits today.” She said a little frustrated about the situation.

“Happy birthday, Auntie Emm!” Cynthia cheered, flanked by her daughters as they burst into the room. “Right, now, I know you probably didn’t want anything flashy, but Morgan couldn’t help herself."
Morgan dropped a large book on the table, beaming slightly. "So we kind of gathered up a whole bunch of artists and, well, bought you a bunch of pictures! Look, there’s me, and Uncle Chrom, and…uh…” She hesitated on the next. “…what I remember Lady Phila looking like when I’m from. I, uh - I thought you might like that.”
When Cynthia and her girls burst through the doors and practically flew into the room, Emmeryn hardly flinched. Only her niece could make an entrance like that... well, only her niece or a horde of Risen, but the latter could hardly bother her here. What truly caught the former Exalt off guard was what the three young women brought with them. Excited birthday wishes, warm smiles, and a lovely book brimming with pictures. Emmeryn didn’t care to admit it out loud, but she had almost forgotten about her birthday.
“Th-Thank you all... This is... wonderful... but you didn’t need to...” she trailed off when she noticed the portrait of Phila on the page Morgan had left open. The fierce look in her eyes... her determined expression... it was like she was alive on the page. Emmeryn had seen other pictures of Phila before, but they were all sketches and portraits made to show her bravery or professionalism. This one... this one showed her as person. Emmeryn couldn’t recall feeling closer to her lost friend before, and a deep feeling stirred inside her.
“Phila... my Phila...” The former Exalt almost choked on the words as something long-buried jogged itself free. “This is... what she looked like... when she trained... She was... so fierce... almost scary, but... always gentle... always there... I-I... I remember that...”
Emmeryn did her best to keep herself together. She wiped the mist from her eyes, rose to her feet, and wrapped all three of her nieces up in a tight yet tender embrace. “Thank you... all of you...”
