WELL they actually started out as like a hill-billy rural kind of brand?? I guess that’s where the “mountain” part of mountain dew comes from. Then they were bought very early by Pepsi and now they’re one of their brands.
But as time went on they had to try to figure out a way to turn the hilly billy country vibe into something they could sell to people in urban communities so they turned to something called “country-cool” where it was like, country people who had an authenticity to who they were, and a care-free lifestyle that was adventurous and cool. And THEN the more adventurous aspect is what eventually grew into the skater brand associations that you’re familiar with.
Mountain Dew has always tried to market itself more to sub-cultures and those who identify outside of the mainstream. But something really unique they did in the video was their “dewmocracy” campaign which they allowed people to basically create their own mountain dew flavors. People were involved in the whole process, from flavors, to names, to cartridges, to who was in charge of marketing them. I think the whiteout flavor was a result of their...second dewmocracy campaign?
ANYWAY their dewmocrazy campaigns were crazy successful as far as customer engagement went, they got millions of people to vote on the flavors, watch their videos, follow their accounts, and contribute to some part of the process, which is doubly impressive considering that their industry has been declining apparently over the past ten years as a whole. You can see other products trying to do the same thing in other industries, like lays potato chip flavor contests.
....BUT I STILL ASSOCIATE THEM WITH DORITO HAND GAMER DUDE-BROS
